I was wondering if you guys could advise me on weather to buy new underlay from rimmer bros or could i get a good underlay from a carpet shop and cut myself. I already have new carpets, just don,t know which way to go

Don't know where you got the new carpets from but the ones from the main suppliers are good to go down with the standard backing that means you don't need additional underlay. Areas like the transmission tunnel just wouldn't take any additional padding.
Best of all, IMHO, are Aldridge carpets.

I do not believe in underlays, as they help to keep any moisture in the car and this leads to rust. So I removed the ones in my Stag. The TR6 did without any underlays anyway.

speaking as a domestic carpet fitter I would recommend you use a good felt underlay
My stag came with it fitted under the carpets , it was spray glued to the floor and the carpet glued to the underlay
they have never moved !
felt underlay has the benefit of soaking up water ( rain ) it then dries fairly quickly unlike a rubber underlay that holds water like a sponge
It is also a great sound insulator

Iv'e still got the hairy under lay from the tunnel but i through the old carpet away and i can't remember if it had any under lay
