I have had my 71 MK 1 car since Sept 08 and I started looking back at some of the posts I made aside from the panic posts which I noted start as soon as you get into it, the rest are the normal "How do I do this" and "whats this bit for" So thanks to all the replies.
I have the engine running quite well, a top end overhaul new valves guides etc no apparent cooling problems I have a radiator blanking cap and the MK 1 expansion bottle with the pressure cap on it I used the overflow from the radiator neck to the bottle and it sits on about a third cold and goes to 2/3rds hot then back to 1/3 when cold.
I had a starting problem and ended up jumping wires eventually could get the car running but the only way to shut it of was to disconnect the battery not good. Replaced the ignition switch and ran a wire from the switch to the white wires down by the relays and it started and stopped without the battery bit.
My latest epic chore was to find a front end knock when braking this after complete suspension and drive train overhaul. I am not going to bore you with the details of how what and why but just to say that after a month of looking and checking I found the front drivers wheel, being a wire one was moving on the spline I replaced it with the spare and the knock went away. Oh you live and learn.
After a few attemps to restore the dash wood I decided to redo it, another huge learning curve I now have it covered in American walnut and stained in the same and used a poly urathane spray from Minwax which left no bubbles and it does look very nice. I just need to change the gauge bezels to chrome.
I am in the middle of tracing the electrical internal lights and i am waiting on some parts for that.
Last night I split a spare brake caliper and will replace seals on it and install on the car and that should I hope give me back a really good pedal this after a a modest brain fade, I loosened up the caliper joint bolts by mistake one night looking for the front end knock.
This does rabbit on a bit but I have to say last weekend I did drive about 10 miles and smiled all the way, I still have more work to do but after I put the new tires and alloy wheels on I should be ready to start the smaller stuff.
So thanks to all you guys out here for your help oh and Merry Xmas and all that good stuff.
cheers Stuart
