Yep. They battled on through against all odds and fought against setback after setback. If anybody deserved to win through because of perseverance then it was them but sadly, it was not to be.
I remember my first ride in a Saab 99 back in the 70s. Like a car from another planet compared to the Escorts and Hunters I was used to. Front wheel drive, handbrake worked on the front wheels (handbrake turns were awkward to say the least), bonnet was half the front of the car it opened backwards, the triumph motor was installed backwards, the ignition key was in the centre console and you could not remove it without the parking brake on - or something like that, the dash was a huge vertical wall - but they were so cool. The Saab turbos were quite a sight on rallies you could see the discs glowing red through the wheels - didn't seem to see this with other cars perhaps the wheels were different.
That was probably the best thing - they were different. Vive la difference! I guess that really died with GM ownership in the 90s but I will miss them.
