Consider re-chroming before purchasing new bumpers

I made the mistake of buyinganew rear bumper kitand overriders, sourced from Rimmers by my excellent local classic car garage, Caroline's Cars in Norfolk. The bumpersrusted within six months, despite being regularly cleaned, waxed etc. - and I've loads of pictures to prove it!

When the bumperswere sent back to Rimmers, all they said was that they'd not been cleaned and that they would not replace them. That's after they'd sat on them for several weeks and hung up on me when I phoned their trade line (the Manager did admit that he'd never received a day's Customer Service training in his life!)

Caroline's Cars have been excellent and are currently purchasing a new set through James Paddock, and are not going tocharge me. They're also moving all their trade business away from Rimmers, and are getting our local Trading Standards Office involved, as apparently this has happened to someone else previously.

The cost of re-chroming the bumpers I already had on the car would have been about the same as buying new ones, but at least the quality would have been assured if I'd have re-chromed.

Might be worth thinking about if you're bumpers are looking a bit tatty.

As some of you know I have had my rear bumpers rechromed and they look amazing, the new ones are also thinner metal allegedly.

If they are anything like the repro chrome bumpers Iput onto my father-in-law's MGB roadster when I fitted a Heritage shell in '96then yes they probably are thinner.

I would have had the originals re-chromed but they were pretty badly bent and dented - replacing them with repros was a no-brainer as they were only£45 each and the OEMs were well into 3 figures.

Remakably they are still on the car, although they are deteriorating due to the car living outside for the past 12 years....

Soon after acquiring my white StagI decided to re-chrome the two rear side bumpers only to find that one of them was an after-market product AND WAS TOO THIN TO RE-CHROME!

I was lucky thereafter to source a good condition original bumper that re-chromed perfectly well, so if you have original, thicker, bumpers I would definitely stick with them.

I am aware of someone who had a new front bumper from Rimmers only to discover that it had a 90 degree twist in it, along its entire length.

He sent it back and paid to have his originals rechromed, which after 10 years, still polish up nicely.

          You pays your money...
