    Water pump advice

Need some advice around water pumps, I am currently replacing the head gaskets and whilst I am at thought that I would check the condition of the water pump, the casing has the six vein water pump code on it, however on removal the water pump is a twelve vein type, so my question is, can you run a twelve vein water pump in a 6 vein casing without any issues, or should I replace the casing with a twelve vein casing.

    Cheers

They definitely need to be matched parts. Are you sure it is a six vane cover?

      Hi Pete

Yes checked the code against rimmers part catalogue and has the code 217993 which is for the six vein although the pump is 12...looks like i need 12 vein cover...the cover was a real pig the get off..

      Cheers

        Hello Phil,

you really should make sure that you have matching parts. In my Stag this very constellation led to blowing the head gaskets, as there was a vapour lock in the water pump housing.

        Good luck!
        Dieter.

          Hi Phil,

It is easy to check if the cover and impeller are a matched set. There is a different angle to each pump impeller. If the impeller vanes are at the same angle as the pump cover you don't have a problem, this is easily checked by fitting the impeller into the cover.

Water pump got me wondering now

Phil recently removed and refurbed mine and never checked just assumed it was 12 vane matched with my impellor. The only identification I can see was stamped on it STANPART ( PBM ) Got me worried now

Difficult to tell from the photos, but I have a 6 vane cover in the shed and it has STANPART PBM and the number 88217993 cast into the top surface
The angle of the recess is about 45 degrees on a 6 vane cover, but nearer 20 or 30 degrees on a 12 vane from memory
I don't know if the covers look any different from the bottom, but my 6 vane cover looks identical to the one in your photo

I've had 2 engines with the 6 vane pump and both have the writing on the top of the cover. So I would say the 6 is on the right and 12 on the left. The 6 also has a longer spout for the top hose and a longer angled surface.

as niel said the impellor angle should be the same as the housing angle to achieve the reqiured clearance for this thing to stir the coolant (so a matched pair angularly is required).that is why it is shimmed to give an adequate impellor housing clearance within the design tollerance for efficient pumping oops sorry i mean stirring as thats what it is a circulation device and not what i would regard as a pump.

Going by the angle where the impellor sits the one on the left is the same angle as mine 12 vane, the one on the left is more acute, although the spout is slightly longer on the one I have going by the photos.
Going by the condition of my impellor on removal it had been there for a long time, and although encrusted with rust which actually looked like barnicles, it had done it's job until it started to leak.
