My first post! Thought I'd introduce myself....

Hi all, I've finally got around to registering on the forum after spending the last few weeks browsing through the posts. SOC membership will be purchased after I've survived Christmas
I acquired my Mk1 Stag, DRS145L last November, it had belonged to a friend of mine who died suddenly a few years ago and had been stored in his lock up. Unfortunately the garage roof had started to leak at some point in the last 5 years and a porous soft top meant that the car was sodden through It was in good condition when it was laid up in 2003 due to a brake master cylinder failure and despite the damp storage, it's faired reasonably well.
I moved it to my dry lock up where it has sat drying out for the last year, minus the rotten remains of the carpets, while I finished the restoration of my much loved Singer Chamois coupe. The Stag was moved down to the garage next to my flat in November this year so that recommissioning work could start in earnest! The first challenge was to get the engine running for the first time in 8 years. Plenty of oil down the bores revealed that it hadn't seized and a quick look with an Aldi's inspection camera showed the bores to be corrosion free. The oil & antifreeze were drained and the cooling system flushed fully before replenishing, along with fresh filters, spark plugs, diaphragms in the carbs and a solid state conversion kit for the rotted points in the fuel pump. I also had to strip & clean the ignition switch & with a new battery fitted it was eventually coaxed into life, smoky at first but soon settling down to that glorious V8 burble that I remember from driving the car almost a decade earlier! The icing on the cake was discovering that the clutch hadn't even seized on & it drove back into the garage under it's own power, brilliant
It's currently sitting on axle stands while I rebuild the braking system & assess the small amount of welding needed, more on that later.
I've always hankered after a Stag having started my driving days off with Triumphs, first in a two door Toledo, then a 1500 FWD followed by a 1500TC Dolomite before moving up to a 2000 estate. After a gap of a few years the Triumph bug bit again with the purchase of my boyhood dream car, a Dolomite Sprint in Inca yellow! A while later a 2.5PI was good fun too, I guess I'm just working my way through the range
My plan is to do a rolling restoration on the Stag over a few years as this is one I want to keep along with my Imp.
well, that's enough rambling for now, no doubt I'll be asking lots of advice in the coming months but meanwhile, there is a link to a few pictures of my Stag below, does anyone know DRS 145L, previously from the Aberdeen area?

    Regards, Jim

Hi Jim, welcome to the forum, we met at the Hawes inn a couple of months ago. As you have said lots of information on here, just ask away. If I can be of any help let me know. If you need to have a look at another Stag for any reason just PM me. Weather is a bit milder today so I am spending some time in the garage finding out what pallet shims I need for the tappets.

Welcome to the forum Jim. That's a good intro and could only have been improved with a few pictures!

Anyway nice to see you are a Triumph man and look forward to hearing about the car as it progresses.

Welcome Jim. Good luck with the re-commissioning; it sounds like you are on the right track and have started well. Your photobucket link is to a private album, so we (I) can't see the pictures.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys, I've sorted the photobucket albulm now so it's viewable, fortunately i've a much better grasp on anything car related than I do with computers
Peter, I'll certainly give you a shout if I need any help, likewise if you're struggling with those shims, I'm a dad hand at doing them in the Imp!
Enjoy the pictures guys, hopefully it will be roadworthy sometime next year (but don't hold me to that as my 6 week tidy up on the Chamois coupe took over 3 years

              Regards, Jim

Welcome to the forum Jim, looks like a very good car despite its soggy storage conditions. How come I can see the photos when others say they can't?
One problem with photobucket is that you are always the 100,000th visitor that day, and you have always won an ipad or some similar electric gadget, I suppose someone must believe it!

                  I am disappointed I didn't win anything!!

Doesn't look too bad considering considering how wet it has been, It's nice the engine started without too much bother, hope everything else goes as well!

                  Cheers and welcome

                  Keith
My opinion is worth exactly what you paid for it.

Hi Neil, I'm very pleased with the condition over all but I think another year in that damp lock up would have done some serious damage. The bumpers & chromework have suffered but that's part of the longer term refurbishment plan.
I changed the Photobucket album to share the pictures last night but my posts have to be approved by a moderator so it's a slow process posting just now Is this because I'm a trial member or does it happen to everyone?
Keith, the banners on Photobucket are a pain, I'll have a go at changing the pictures to direct upload once my posting restrictions are lifted so apologies for that just now. The engine is firing up instantly & already had electronic ignition fitted so that's a bonus. I'm just running from a petrol can in the boot as I'll check & clean the tank when I have it out to weld the boot floor to rear wing seam, it's used about 3/4 a gallon of fuel already & hasn't moved out off the drive yet
                    Regards, Jim

What colour are you respraying it, as the paint seems to have been washed off after being in that leaky garage!!!

                          Hi Al,
white is the new black you know, it's already two tone with some rust anyway If I'm honest, white wouldn't have been my first choice but I want to keep the car original & it's the easiest colour to spray when I get onto the painting bit as well!
European Voyager, good to see from your avatar that your Stag is in the right colour too, it matches your caravan as well Thanks for the offer of help, I'll keep that in mind when I get stuck!!

                          Regards, Jim
