    Thanks. Got one at last!

Well I have got my Stag now, went for a manual in the end. Thanks to Bob and Mark for the advice re pressure or lack of it in the expansion bottle - spot on- new bottle and cap and it's fine now.

Picked it up Saturday - should have been a hour and half drive back up the motorway home. Only got five miles and broke down!! Dirt in the fuel tank blocking up the pick up. Difficult to deal with when you have no tools with you. Anyway did not fancy the motorway so came back on normal roads, broke down one more time and journey took 7 hours altogether including getting a few tools etc! Hardtop was on as it was the only way to get it home and the sun shone all the way - typical!

Spent Sunday taking out and cleaning tank, pump etc etc and seems fine now.

But I love it ! Not keen on the wheels so will be changing them when finances allow.

Congratulations Giles, welcome to the madhouse and a life of poverty!! I must be lucky, in four years mine has never broken down, including the first trip which was from Colchester to Kettering. It did vibrate all the way due to the worn prop uj's and misfired if you accelerated hard! A new prop and a clean of the ignition system soon sorted it out! You will have teething problems, get them sorted and enjoy the V8 burble...

      All the best

The more you use it the better it gets - mine is used daily and is extremely reliable - here's hoping you have the same luck from here onwards!

        Welcome to the fold

Welcome, Giles. Another Carmine Red car? We'll soon be outnumbering the white ones :P

I bought mine home on what i found out laterto be 1 front brake pad due to
            • Master cylinder was only pumping to the front
            • one flexi hose on the front was calapsed so 1 caliper was useless
            • the last remaining caliper working had 1 of the pistons seized.

            :shock::shock::shock::shock::shock::shock:

Drove it about 40 miles like that ,it was ok unless i hit it hardand did a 1 wheel skid.needless to say i replaced every thing.

Blimey - it makes me think I was very lucky - all mine did was get a bit warm on the temp gaugeif taken over 60, that went back downif returned to 60 for a bit.....

That and a high idle where the carbs needed balancing properly and a touch of Triumph Twitch.

It still (touch wood) hasn't broken down yet.

I must have been very lucky. When I picked mine up on March 1st I drove it around the M25 from Sevenoaks, down the M3 and over to S Oxfordshire, about 60 miles. The only problem was a bit of misfiring in the last 5 miles.

So far I have just sorted out the ignition and carbs, fixed a wiper that wouldnt stop, replaced a few bushes on the exhaust and thats it. 700 trouble free miles so far. I do find it a bit scary reading others trials and tribulations with Stags that they have bought.

If I was buying a Stag again I think I would definately buy something from a knowledgeable person who posts on this forum. That way you could be pretty sure that you were getting something good, like Bill's.I bought from an honest guy with little mechanical knowledge who had all work done by specialists almost regardless of cost. What I got was a reasonable mechanically sorted Stag with a rust free body but slightly worn interior which is relatively easy to fix.

I can't wait for this summer, its going to do quite a few miles

If I was buying one again I would either do that or take Mr knowledgable with me to view the car

Which is pretty much what I did, still had a few problems but nevertheless I could have done a lot worse!

The bloke I bought mine from was OK on the basics, but didn't have an eye for detail so did some stupid things - like drilling the hole for the aerial on the OSR wing in the wrong place so that he couldn't fit a retractable aerial because he drilled it before refitting the filler cap and neck, and they both wanted to occupy the same space:?....

Also his home fitting of an obviously expensive leather interior kithas left a lot to be desired - hopefully I can tidy it up enough to pass muster.

It seems he applied the same care to fitting the nice green mohair soft-top cover, but that is something I'll have to live with until I can justify replacing it - at least it doesn't leak - much.

He did however give me a decent solidbase to make a Stag for my old age and as I have no intentions of selling it in the foreseeable future, anything I spend is all to the "betterment of my ownership experience":P

It's not so much car ownership, but more of a life choice
