    Smelling Petrol

Ok, All you with dirty fingernails, been smelling petrol on & off for the past few weeks from the engine, just put it down to being part of the 70's aroma, however got the good old nose sniffing round the carbs and found that the plug at the bottom of the carb on the l.h bank is dripping slowly:shock:, Does anyone know whether i can remove the plug to fit new o ring with the carbs in situ? much appreciated

    Hi, Baz,

Don't think so. The plug is quite deep and there is little space underneath to get at it. See drawing.

I'd take the carbs and float chambers off. The plastic thingy has sprogs inside to retain it, you'd probably break these off pulling at it. Simple to change o rings tho.

I just pulled mine out when I overhauled the carbs, didn't break anything. I did have a lot of trouble removing the float chamber gasket though, it was stuck on with something and took an age to get off. If you take the float chamber off, make sure you have a replacement gasket to hand.

You might find that if you undo the nut holding the carbs to the manifold, you can get the plugs out of the bottom withot having to disconnect too much. Not sure without looking though.

Someone else may be able to confirm this but I think some of the bungs were screw fit, if that is the case you may have to take the carbs off to get at it.

I had the same problem last year and did mine. You can't get the plugs out with the carbs on - I undid the pedestal nut and cables and took the whole lot off in one lump - only takes 5 minutes, and while I was at it opened up the float chambers and cleaned out all the red residue that seems to build up in there, checked the floats andcleaned the needle valves as thisis a very easy procedure once the carbs are off. Just get a pair of new float chamber gaskets and a new pedestal O ring.

Mine's a '74 MKII and has the push in type plugs.

          Cheers,

          Bob.

Thanx Dave, Dave H, Bob(aerosilver) & sheepdip:shocksorry did so many things in my rugby days:shock:)

Changed the o-ring & pedestal in 5 mins, with the help of my brother in-law'ish:shock:, without removing any cables. Also changed the cam cover gasket & half moon as there was a small weep at the rear.

Visited 'doastags' today as advertised in the stag mag, had a great result,This man has an'AladdinsCave'& Cave& Cave, bought a few items that are original & Seb certainly knows what a Stag is built with, as he told me even what type of screw should of been fitted to all the bodywork:shock:, The end result being that my purchase is a nice original car

            Yippee!
