Over Charging?

I took the Stag out for a good run yesterday, started first time and ran like a dream right up to the point I commentated on how well she was going!
Shortly after that I noticed the Battery Condition/Alternator charging gauge had moved from it's normal position to right over almost to the red section.
Question is does this mean the alternator is on the way out or is there something else at fault?

Does it only happen when engines running? Try turning on ignition without starting the engine. If it still happens then you have a bad electrical connection somewhere or faulty gauge.

If it only happend when engine is running, measure the battery voltage with an accurate voltmeter (multimteter). It should not exceed about 14.5 volts otherwise you probably have a faulty alternator (or regulator if a MK1 type).

It happened whilst driving approx 15 miles into a total journey of 25 miles.
Just before I noticed the change to the reading the auxiliary fan indicator started to glow quite brightly which normally only happens when it cuts in!
needless to say given yesterdays temp this was never going to happen.
I will check with a multimeter the next time I take it out.

Hi, the warning light is only the fan windmilling as you move forward, you can fit a diode to stop it, but I don't think it's worth the trouble. Martin.
