The cost of running a triumph stag

Hello everyone i hope you all had a nice Christmas, having owned my stag for very nearly one year now I thought it would be useful to put on here the cost of running a triumph stag for one year covering 5000 miles.
This obviously is not aimed at the long term hardened stag owners amongst you but any new members or people who look at the forum and are thinking about buying a stag this will serve as a guide on what to expect from what i think is an average years motoring in a triumph stag.
The car a russet brown 1978 mk2 cost me £5000 with a hard top, the condition was good with some bubbling around two wheel arches no leaks except a slight drip from the diff (2 drips per week) there was also a donk occasionally from the prop shaft area when rolling in gear but this has not got any worse after 5000 miles, i had a donk just like it in my old hillman hunter went on for years.
The underneath was in perfect condition no rust, there was 6 months mot, the car sailed through its new mot after 6 months, I run the car on super unleaded with an additive, the car is used on average 2 times per week all year but not in the rain.
After several months the car developed an oil leak, power steering leak, water leak in the vee (repaired with kseal) all these have now been attended to although the water leak appears in a slight form now and again,I just know this is a big job water pump or inlet manifolds im just scared to do it at the moment.
The car was bought to use and enjoy so the engine is clean and tidy but you would'nt eat your dinner off it!, the body was good but i did want the car to turn heads so i have had a re spray and is polished regulary, the interior is tidy but not perfect, the soft top is newish with two small tears which i have repaired with diver suit glue.
Here is a list of all the jobs that have been carried out over the year bearing in mind this car has never failed to start or broken down, all this work was carried out by myself with advice from the forum when needed.
Fitted new soft TOP plunger, new door mirror, radiator gator, bonnet stops, soft top side seal, throttle cable, new carburettor linkage, new fuel pipes to carbs, oil filler cap gasket, oil pump and transfer housing repairs and o rings. fitted new oil pressure gauge. new choke cables, new clutch slave cylinder, new thermostat (there was no overheat problems), fitted header tank kit, new window screen wiper, new fuel pump, fitted hot air pipe and hose, new radio aerial , complete service kit , and a system flush, balanced carbs, colour tuned carbs.
All these parts incuding the respray came to £2071.54 , this would be a good deal higher if there were any labour charges, add to that £1705 on petrol which to date shows the stag is returning just over 16 miles per gallon, it may be a bit more than this but some figures were estimated but its not far out, this being around town or village driving and when on the open road i dont hang around so i am not sure how that compares with anyone else out there, i dont care really its just pure joy to drive.
There is a kenlow fan fitted but it has came on only once (see below) so i have rewired this up to manual operation in case its ever needed, The header tank was fitted because i believe the water pump could be starved of water on a hill, this did happen to me once when parked at road works on a steep hill its the only time the engine has ever got hot and made the kenlow work so the header tank seemed the answer to me which indeed it was.
I hope this has been of use to someone it just leaves me to add thanks to all that have helped me over the past year, the car would not have remained on the road without the guidance from the forum,
wishing every one a happy and stag problem free new year..Steve

That's interesting stuff Steve. I daren't add up what I spend.
I like the idea of the Radiator Gator. Next time a traffic warden comes near the bonnet, the Stag Croc gets him...

I'm with Giles, I have a ridiculously accurate log of everything spent on the old girl in the last eight years, but I have never totalled it, nor will I, unless I'm ever unfortunate enough to have to part with her. Ignorance can be bliss. Martin.

Before I bought the car someone told me they are a money pit, but i think that would apply to any classic car so money well spent if you ask me, better than wasting it on fags and booze. if thats your car in the avatar i love the colour..Steve

I certainly think it could be a horrifying experience to see how much has been spent as, in the main, we do it as we love the car rather than do it for a profit.

When I started I meant to keep a record but of course I didn't. I started off knowing as there were only a few bits but 15 months on I haven't a really good idea other than the larger expenses. As far as I know though, I am at about the level I had set as my limit to get s workable beast

Good of you to sit down and write this little log Steve - such stuff always makes good reading.

Not so sure about the radiator gator, but I'm definitely going to be looking out to get me one of them soft plungers!*

Have spent £3150 on panels and paint job, another £397 on parts (today)for the rear drive train and that's only the start of this nut and bolt rebuild!
