Replacement water pump - electric or belt driven?

    Hi All

If you were to replace the original type water pump in your TV8 with an external pump, would you fit electric or belt driven? I know a few of you have fitted Stagdad's belt driven type but who apart from RogerP has fitted an EWP? Does one type have a significant benefit over the other? Which is perceived to be more reliable?

    Thoughts please gents.

    Regards

    Bruce

If I were replacing mine I'd go for the belt-driven choice

I have both fitted, EWP to the Stag engined TR as there is no room for belt driven, and a Stagdad kit to the stag. Both were fitted after pump failure, the case in the Stag being catastrophic, leading to jackshaft seizure and full engine rebuild.
A full EWP kit is expensive as it needs a second pump to work the heater, the controller for the pump working in either 10 seconds in 30, 20 seconds in 30, or continuously for hot.
I made a poverty spec kit using an old ceramic ignition ballast resistor to run the pump at part speed all the time while retaining the thermostat which means the heater still works. I have been intending to wire it to the fan switch to give full power when hot for a couple of years now, but since it has never got hot my motivation has wained.
This EWP has been on three cars now so I have no real idea of the mileage it has covered, maybe 15-20,000miles, over perhaps 8 years, whereas the Stagdad kit has done 6000 over 2 years, both completely reliable.
When I installed the Stagdad kit I noticed that that the drain hole in the bottom of the pump casing does not actually sit at the bottom when installed. This should not matter until the pump seal starts to fail, and may mean the bearings will fail sooner when it does, but the pumps are cheap anyway, and you can always do what I did and drill another hole in the bottom of the casing which may give the pump bearings a little longer life

I would go the belt driven route myself, but that is just personal preference to be honest

I would think that an electric pump, given a big enough battery, would have the additional advantage in the case of overheating en route that you can pull off into a lay-by, switch off engine, and run the fan and cooling system to get the temperature down without the associated heat sink effect in the engine which would happen if you switch off the engine and stop water circulation.

I guess the ultimate would be to have one of those Canadian/Swedish plug in water heaters in the garage and electric driven water circulation to get the car toasty warm in Winter before driving off! (Could reduce Winter engine wear as well, I am led to understand)

                My two pence worth.
The EWP is more expensive, but what I like about it, is after you turn off the ignition the pump carries on running for around another 2 min so that reduces hot spots. The other good thing like Drew says you can turn the engine off but still keep the pump running. I had a case when stuck in traffic going into Silverstone the temp went up to 110 never done that before, couldnt understand why, when I pulled over the electric fan had stopped working (no engine fan fitted) turned engine off put ignition on turned on heater fan and within 5 min temp was down to 80 so thats got to be a good point, turned out to be a bad earth on the fan. The other thing to remember is the EWP will still pump full rate even on tickover, where any mechanical pump will drop the flow rate right down when you need it, stuck in traffic.

Koy 23 has also got one fitted but he had a bottom hose made up with a takeoff for the heater, tells me it works fine so dosn't need the additional pump for heater.

I've got a new Craig Davies EWP in the garage if anyone wants one?

I have an electric pump, fitted before Stagdad's kit was available.

We can argue the pro' and con's of either but I never have heard of an engine failure caused by an external pump.

Could they be fitted in parallel or would this lead to an early failure of either part?

i have steves belt driven pump , i probably dont count as it has never been driven on the road yet , but i have had the car ticking over for two hours ,and the needle on the gauge only went up a quarter way , i dont think the neighbours were impressed , philistines , i have to do most of the work in my seven foot wide garage ,as i get too many interuptions from people walking past ,i live in a culdesac but they walk in from the main rd ,its nice to have compliments ,but i want to get it finished ,

Sounds like a topic for the technical section,John

Like many of you, I guess, my cooling system is something I remain concerned about.

So (& I think this has been discussed on here before) what about this stuff ?: http://www.evanscooling.uk.com/ClassicCool180.html

                              B
ecause the boiling point is 180 degrees there is no need to run the cooling system under any pressure so surely that's got to help in all sorts of ways.

I'm tempted, very tempted !! And then add an external pump of some sort !!

                              Cheers
