All the glitters is not gold !

Well i have finally made a start today , my first worry was those rust bubbles , you all know where !!!!
Rear arches and front lower wing next to the door , after using the mini grinder on the lower wing with a wire brush i instantly came into filler (not the best feeling in the world and had dreamed of it the night before ) before i knew it i was back to a rotting repair !
Onto the rear arches , more filler and a horible inner bit of metat that was put on to create the lip of the arch
I have ordered two rear arches repair panels and lower wing panels , the rest of the car is now worrying me , it all looks straight as a die and the paint is at least 10 years old so any repair work has lasted very well , i would just prefer to thorough !
If anyone has any tips or miss givings on what repair panels to use please say , e j ward did say the arch repair spat is less intrusive as the weld is in a nice place to blend out !
I am tempted to dig about on the rear wing next to the door but at present they look immaculate!
    Regards edd

I would use heritage or SOC panels if I had to do it again.
I did get a good front wing and both full outer sills but the other repair panels were cheap non SOCFTL bits and the fit was poor at best. Actually they were c*** but after a good bit of cutting and welding they all fitted in the end with out any huge set backs. I did rear wing repair panels, front inner wing repairs (by far the worst fit I have ever seen). I had to make up a jigsaw of repair panels for the left front wing and fortunately they weren't so bad.

Good luck with your project anyway and we look forward to some pictures soon!

When I did my rear arches last year I found that it had already had replacement arches fitted (over the originals)! so I had to go for the larger panels that included the lower quarter panel section up to the door. I ended up pruning these back quite substantialy, as I did't see any point in replacing more metal than necessary
I used E J Ward for the panels, and was very happy with their fit, not as happy with the courier firm that managed to lose the first set sent, Wards sent another set and I hope they got reimbursed by the couriers!

          Thanks

Thanks Neil for that I have followed your forum pictures and they have and will help ! I too have been told by wards the quarter panels are the best option. Being as I have uncovered filler i think my rear panel bottom door will be botched too so I am going to replace and check out inner sill too like you did. Patch work is ok for me so long as it strong and out of sight
Chomping at the bit to get started now
Regards edd. You will enjoying swing my pictures I'm sure

I'd agree with Neil when using replacement patch panels use the smallest part of them you can - while still cutting back to good metal of course. The only thing I'd add to that is to think about where the welded seams are going to be. It's easier to get a good result with flat metal than if the seams occur on curves or compound curves.

Thanks for that Nick ! I think i have been slightly juped with my stag and starting to find lots more filler than originally expected . My boot was one of the first things i inspected and looked great , today i took a deep breath and took the wire brush to it , all that could be seen was a ash cloud from iceland , yep filler ! about half inch thick !
I am going to fit the two rear quarter panels as they have a nice flange and will fit them in acordance to the very helpfull ej ward dvd i have purchased , here is hoping my inner arches are recoverable !!!
I will be taking pictures and posting them ! I ground my sill in a few places and they look solid and the history fill i have shows a purchase of sills, so far all filler has been back u by welding underneather so it better than finding holes stuffed full of sunday news papers from the 80,s !
Now my plan is to start going back to bear metal where i can , i am cursed like most owners at being a perfectionist (when i can afford to i hasten to add ) i am lucky as my body shop friend is looking at the car and going to advise and supply the right matterials as i am spray primmering myself ! He will then take the car and check and iron out any of my failings ( not to many i hope )
I think once i start and with the days and weather improving this slightly depressing start will not get me down as i have wanted this car for 30 years and used to draw it over and again as child !
I can see myself oneday doing a total shell but for now i want this one nice and solid and back in the sun where it deserves to be
              Regards edd

Well done Edd - I'm too scared and inept to do mine, don't have a large garage (hmm envy) or a wife and family that will let me go and attend to my mistress.

I know the feeling I have always wanted to restore a stag but my home has a tiny garage. The one it is in is a very kind friend who doesn't use it and lives close. My daughters are teenagers now and I do have more me time ( when I ask nicely )
I wouldn't have started digging if I wasn't confident I can fix her she looked so great but under is 40 years of history. It has a new rebuilt engine clutch and floor is solid so mainly cosmetic panels to repair.
Had a good day today and less depressed at finding so much filler.
                    Regards edd
