This picture was published in 'Triumph Stag' by Andrew Moreland in 1991:

Does it still exist? No idea.

DVLA says it hasn't been taxed since June 1978.

Having watched the Stag (Michelotti's masterpiece) at Christmas, IIRC I think X777 might be one of those owned by Peter Robinson who is the membership secretary of SOC - if so, it's beyond restoration sadly

Perhaps somebody with better knowledge can confirm / deny ?

I have just googled the Reg No and found a bit more background info.

          "X777, PVC 237G
Build completed March 28 1968; LHD with automatic transmission. Originally pale yellow. Fitted with air conditioning and US marker lamps, also with fuel expansion tank for US safety-regulation experiments. Dual Exhausts and hidden headlamps. Roll-over bar from new; first car fitted with T-bar, during 1968. Fitted with CV joints instead of UJs in rear suspension. Seen in early pictures with number plates GDU 680D (front) and 1325 HP (rear). Used for pave testing, air conditioning tests in North Africa, brake tests in North Wales and suspension tests. Survives but in very poor condition!! "

X790 is alive and well and is owned by Dave Jell who used to be the club historian, he lives here in West Sussex and the car was on display at the National at Fontwell Park. Dave visits the forum now and again and he has a wealth of knowledge about early Stags and their whereabouts.

Just took another look at the Codename:Stag DVD, my error Peter Robinson has what's left of the 'Straw Dogs' Stag which I mistakenly recalled might've been X777 (he does own X783 though)

However X777 is briefly mentioned elsewhere as surviving but in poor condition

A while ago I was told that it was still owned by SOC spares but I don'tremember who told me that.

                    prototype x777

She still exists just as I sold her to Stuart Souter 20+ years ago with the proviso that he rebuild her. Unfortunately nothing has happened and is probably in a worse state now. I did think that S.O.C. spares was part of the club but after selling the car I found out that Stuart owned S.O.C. spares with a rather large free loan from the club. There has been much rubbish talk about X777 like it was used for TR5/6 engine testing, the engine that was in it when I rescued it was a 6 out of a Triumph 2500 saloon. when first built it was equiped with a 6cyl but quickly gained a 2.5 V8 stag engine. Then upgraded to 3.0 V8 and was used in North Africa for A/Con and heat sink testing with a TR6 and Rover 2000? Thel were wired up to check temperatures and both X777 and TR6 had hard tops on. I have tried in the past to buy back the car to no avail many years ago. If Stuart you do read this and would let me have the car back I am in a position to get the job done. If anyone wants anymore info contact me. Dave Jell. Happy New Year everyone.

The stag was to have both the 6 cyl engine and 2.5 V8 engine (I have most of a V8 2.5 engine and would like any info on them and any bits for it), but after testing etc it was decided to go to 3.0 ltrs to improve it. So the 2.5 V8 was dropped and prototype work carried on with the 3.0 V8.The original 3.0 ltr engines had much improved head gaskets that allowed for expansion between head and block with no problems but the good old accountants decided to save a few shillings and use the inferior gaskets costing pounds when they went wrong. X777 was driven to North Africa in convoy with a TR6 and Rover 2000 for testing in the desert and on the way blew a gasket near Paris so Harry Colley (Stag Project Engineer) had to replace it over night in the hotel car park.

                          Hi Tim,

For more detail, you can buy the book 'Triumph Stag: The Complete History" by our esteemed Dave (above) and James Taylor.

This is the detailed list of prototypes from there.

                          Cheers

                          Julian
