    Overdrive not working

changed the wiring as it was faulty.

Changed the solenoid as it was dead

Overdrive still not working, I want to check the oil level. This needs to be done with the car on the level. Am I missing a trick or are we talking jacking up the whole car and putting her on axle stands etc:?

Any easy fix here? also any advise on positioning of jacks/axle stands

You have checked the fuse haven't you? As it is unusual for an overdrive to just die!

Yes all the electrical bits are doing what they are suposed to do.

First I want to check the oil level then I will (if necessary) check the adjustment

when you say changed the wireing, have you changed the switch, they are pesky bu%^ers . I did all of the above and then changed the final thing....new switch and hey presto!!

jacks/axle stands always best beneath the car, unless you are moving!!

on the front and rear boxy bits sticking out from the middle area is best i put a bit of hard wood on the jack head to avoid underside damage. never rely on a jack alone even if you don't rest the car hard on an axle stand have it under just off the body work of ,the car just in case.

even if its a quick job, use both.

When Darren popped around a few weeks ago I changed the switch for a known good one, and the wiring to it with brand new from ANG Triumph. The fuse was checked. I could get 12v at the connection to the the solenoid on demand from the switch.

          Darren,

When you operate the switch, does the solenoid operate? If so, then check the adjustment we discussed, in accordance with the manual. If this is OK, then it must be down to lack of oil pressure or other fault internal.

The oil level can be checked with the car on the ground as long as you have long arms. Reach underneath with a 7/16 spanner and undo the filler plug. If this is too tight, then it may be necessary to raise the front on DIY maintenance ramps to get access to loosen it, then put the car back on the ground. Peel back the passenger carpet and you will find a plate fixed to the tunnel side with 4 screws. Remove this. Using a length of plastic extension tubing on a bottle of EP90, it is possible to top up the gearbox until oil comes out of the filler plug hole. Mop up and replace the plug from underneath.

Yeh happened to me on my first Stag

Easy test ,take switch top of and manualy touch wires together whilst driving.

V8 Rumbler, did you also replace the wiring loom which goes from the gearbox to the engine bay? There is a connection there which is just underneath the car, my overdrive wasnt working due to this being filled with crud, try cleaning it with some WD40

Just a tip to fill the gearbox, I use a copper elbow for water pipe attached to garden hose with funnel at the other end. Feed the hose down the side of the gearbox from the engine bay,the elbow fits tightly into the gearbox filler hole and then fill the gearbox from the engine bay.

                  regards,

                  Raoul

Every now and then when my cars are having some work done on them in my local garage I ask them to check the gearbox oil for me. From what you all say I am saving myself quite a lot of hassle for little expense.

                      Well:?

Firstly I checked the oil level and topped her up - about a pint went in. she seems to have a leak from the very bottom where there is a 3'' white disk with slots in in (protected by a metal plate) ANY IDEAS.

Then I went up the road -----nothing

The bracket that the solenoid opperates was slightly bent- so the the soleniod couldn't return . So I unbent it

Then I went up the road -----nothing

Then I checked the adjustment- tried to find a spanner to go on Rimmers part 503164

and failed but it wasn't too tight so I moved it by hand

Then I went up the road --it worked

But only twice :Xback home to the garage that adjustment nut (Rimmers part 503164) needs to be tightened.

So today I will be sawing a spanner in half to get on the nut to tighten it

If you need a spanner to tighten the soleniod for J type overdrive I have one I can post to you!

Mad Cyclist borrowed it last time with great success!

                          Hi

Mine is the 'a' type overdrive and I need a spanner very short to tighten the adjuster I think it is slightly smaller than 1/2''

I need the spanner to undo the nut 503164 which is inside 518111 with limited access due to transmission tunnel

                              Darren,

You can improve access by putting a trolley jack on the gearbox mount, undo the 4 g/box mount bolts and lower the tail. Gets it out of the tunnel.

I think you are getting close to resolving the problem anyway.
