could anyone help me as i am a very new member of the club and only recently obtained my 76 mk 2 stag, the engine has undergone a large rebuild (started by previous owner) the heads have not been bolted back down as yet but need to know if the original exhaust need to be of the harden type to run on unleaded petrol the ones in it now have been refaced an reground and clearence set has anyone got an opinion on this, with thanks bob the builder.

welcome, bob im guessing?the original valves should be adaquate if seated correctly .depends on the driving style and whether you tow or not there are some who only do 2k a year soft and others who cane it and tow they would be the candidates for hardened valve seats and tougher valves .but if its done and ok put it together and drive it,using good quality fuel at the higher octane end you will be a long time waiting for them to give up,just make sure the clearances are within tolerance ,,,,,

        Hi Bob,

Welcome to the forum and Stag ownership. I'm sure you'll be able to find help and advice to all manner of questions on here. How about some pics of your car ?

The Stag was intended for the US market, where unleaded was the norm, and so had hardened valve seats and thus, as Steve has said, unleaded is fine. TR7 exhaust valves are somewhat tougher and so, if you want belt and braces, it might be worth fitting these instead of standard ones.

        Cheers

        Julian

There was a rumour that some Stags were built with American spec TR7 exhaust valves - there was an article in the SOC magazine about 14 or 15 years ago. I checked mine at the time, and mine are the US TR7 valves (the part number is stamped near the top of the stem). My heads were bought in 1984 as Unipart new assemblies. Sorry I can't remember the relevant part numbers, but if they aren't the correct Stag number, they are almost certainly the US TR7 ones.
