    Hi Paul,

The A4 runs, very roughly, parallel to the M4 but south of it. If you're looking for the easiest way then I'd get on the M4 for just a short distance and come off at J18 (nice pub nearby) and head south for just a couple of miles until you can turn left onto the A420. Follow this to Chippenham and from there get on the A4 to Reading - there'll even be a good photo opportunity for you just east of Calne where there's one of those big chalk white horses !

An alternative start, to avoid the M4 completely, is the A4174 - a sort of half ring road around Bristol - that starts in Filton and goes round to join up with the A420.

Good luck and please feel free to ask if you want any guidance.

    Cheers

    Julian

Ps Sorry, yes the A4 stops being parallelish and crosses at J12 Theale (where I lived when I had my first Stag 30 years ago)

      Thanks Julian,

I was on the 4174 a couple of weeks ago and it was a nightmare - roadworks! I think i will go back up the A38 and pick up the M4 at Almondsbury and get off again at 18 as you suggest. I will ty and take some photos as well.

      Cheers

Ahhhhh the good old A4174. Bristol's very own Race Track. Always seem to get a boy racer behind me on that stretch of road. Sometimes I just have to leave em in my dust.

Starts With 20, sorry for confusion

Picked it up and got it home (130 miles M4 unfortunately as I was pushed for time). Kept to 70 and below and, although it is running richer than a banker on bonus day and the timing feels miles out, we had a nice run.

Had to admit defeat with the hood down after 25 miles; might have lased longer if the heater had worked!!! Is there a summer/winter setting (like on Midgets) as the air was very cold ie. no heat from the heater?

Engine temp ran at 130, max 160 in traffic, only slight concern was oil pressure which was steady around 20 which I guess will need some investigating. There does appear to be an oil leak from one of the cam covers but I doubt that is the main issue unless someone knows better?
