    11ac alternator trouble

My ignition light come on whilst driving along and the volt meter was showing 11 volts, replaced alternator and its doing exactly the same also sounds like its misfiring now.

Could it be the control box?

    Any help greatly received

I had this problem where the volts dropped found it was the battery not the alternator, take the car toa tyre depot and they will check the battery for you.

As for the miss fire normally ignition related check the plugs, leads, rotor arm, coil and distributor.

    Hope this helps

I would sort out the battery/charging issue before thinking about the misfire, which could be caused by the lack of volts.

      Good luck

The ignition relay (the black box at the top of the suspension strut)has failed on mine twice, causing the ignition light to come on. Both times the coil had burnt out.

I removed the cover and wedged thecontacts closed to make sure I got home.

To remove the cover you need to push outthe centres of the two plastic rivets firstand the cover will then pull off. Should be obvious if it is working.

If I have any more problems with my 11acI will upgrade tothe more modern alternator system.

          I wouldn't wait personally - the 11AC was a royal pain in the a**e........

the 11AC and especially it's control gear is far too frail to be under the very hot bonnet of a Stag - eventhe ACRs struggle with the temp - that's why we have so many problems......

            Thanks for your help everyone

Redstag, youre right,my electric whizzo mate came round and he sussed the ignition relay had expired with his fluke.

I want to go to shuttleworth tommorow, is that bodge of putting the contacts together risky or will it be alright just for tommorow?

            Thanks

I did it for several journeys while waiting for a new part. I don't think there is a particular risk but you do need to open the contacts when you turn off the engine.

Went to Shuttleworth yesterday with 6 local stags. Weather was ok so there was quite a good turnout of cars.

A few autojumble stalls but not many stag parts - not now anyway. You may find the part you need there.

                Nib,

If you need to replace the control relay (fitted to the o/side suspension turret) I have a virtually new one still in its box. Used it for a while to prove it works. You are welcome to it for what it cost me (£15), but I cannot post it until the weekend.
