question for auto box boys ( not stag but could be)

any of you guys with auto,s have you changed the trans fluid ? and did you manage a full drain down?. ive got to change the fluid in my jag and heard through other sources of a method employed by some but dont know who ! whereby they couple into the flow of your auto oil cooler and with the engine running they can completely drain the old while renewing at the same time and therefore its a complete and proper change as the t/converter is emptied to .i am very interested to find out if anyone knows who does this or if it is available or just pubtalk.i need to do mine .hapily my stag is 4/od so no issue there.
any ideas on a full change method appreciated as i dont fancy leaving some of the old to mix with the new especialy at the price of it and as it will be a different fluid.

I have Borg Warner 65, and to be perfectly honest I would let an auto box specialist do this. Don't let your block standard garage do this as I found that most normal garages don't have a clue. I sent mine to specialist in Glasgow for full refurb 2 x years ago. It was expensive but well worth it as it runs as sweet as a nut now. Just my thoughts though

Hiya Steve, certainly with the Stag, you can't properly drain the torque converter, but by leaving it to drip overnight most of the old will come out, Renault used to recommend leaving it for 18 hours. Personally I wouldn't dare run the engine without the trans up to level, and I can't imagine that technique emptying the converter. Martin.

I have heard it mentioned but not by anyone who I know has done it! And I have never done it - but a few thoughts - you have got to drop the sump pan to change the filter, you then refill with new fluid so you can start the engine, this fluid is then wasted as you change it again? Does the fluid circulate though the torque converter in neutral or park (not sure)? Might be possible with the right kit I suppose??

          Hi Steve,

Sounds like pub talk to me, If you were able to do it like this you would need a supply of new oil that was constant and have to trap the old. You still wouldn't clean the TC either as centrifugal force is going to fling the bits of crud to the outside and it would take so much fresh oil to dilute what stays in side it, it would be ridiculous as it only drains down to just below the center anyway.

Some of our Bus transmission at work have a facility to drain the TC but the TC is an integral part of the box and has a plug in the bottom of it's housing but I have never seen anything like this in a car application.

On the same theme, we do something like this for cooling systems. we have a dialysis machine that you connect to the top and bottom hoses (you have to remove the thermostat) and a quite powerful pump, pumps water around it at high pressure. The tank on the machine has a perspex panel on it so you can see what it's flushing out, quite scary what does come out sometimes.

I have thought about using it on the Stag but I'm not sure how the heater matrix would cope so haven't chanced it.

          Ian.

(Giles, when it's running it's full and moving oil all the time)

Just looked on Google images Steve and there are machines out there that can flush your box, it may be worth seeing if there is a local specialist who has one!

thanks for the input guys ,

ian i followed up on google images and found the machine that does this ,all i need to do is buy it and import it !!! not .
someone in the uk must do this or at least some main dealers its not rocket science, ive found basicly that they are as you said using dialysis type technology so it is out there.im changing to a racing type fluid and dont want to contaminate the new, a small residual amount wont matter but more than .25 ltr could be damaging so im informed.
the m/c you use to flush the cooling system on buses must be the same as the kit i have for flushing cooling and heating systems i also use it on huge diesel generator engines and gas engines up to 25ltr eventualy got the courage to try it on the stag .....amazing and cos it has a reverse flush as well it realy does clean well. and with the inverter controlled motor it was brilliant .used a descaling solution compatible with mixed metal types and ran at about 60c for about 30 mins when see the muck in the water it is all soluable but still muck
            cheers steve

I have heard of this method, i.e. breaking into the cooler lines and flushing, used on the 6 speed ZF's in modern Jaguars by Jag manin dealers, but frankly it uses just as much new fluid as changing it the old fashioned way 2 or 3 times in succession.
Header tanks - you can't beat a bit of bling.

Russ/Kryten is a bit of a whizz on auto boxes, might be worth dropping him a PM.
