    Brake discs

I've got a new set of green stuff pads, I just need to get a pair of discs. Cost aside,
Should I go for standard discs, grooved discs, drilled and grooved ?
    Which do you prefer?
Where is the best place to get them?
What are the pro's /cons of each?

    Cheers

Opinions differ but it is generally thought that grooved discs are the best at dispersing heat, followed by drilled and solid last. Drilled and grooved are a bit tricky as I have read conflicting reports on whether the combination is an improvement over either drilled or grooved.

It depends how you drive the Stag but in normal driving I can't see that anything other than standard are actually essential. If you are a quick road driver and hard on the brakes or go on track then I would go grooved. However I would be wanting bigger than standard discs and calipers in that case.

I personally think the cross drilled discs are a disaster waiting to happen - the stress risers caused by the cross drilling can lead to cracks - had to replace a set on the Cobra because of that. EBC dimpled and grooved work well. The grooves etc. are supposed to allow gasses at the interface of pad and disc to escape. Probably not needed on a road car, but look good..........

I took off the Rossini ones (drilled and grooved)because the noise they made drove me bonkers.Made no difference to the braking that I could tell.

        Cheers steve

I can only echo the advice of leaving it standard - unless there is a performance reason to deviate.
There are significant compromises in terms of disc longevity and pad wear associated with grooved/drilled discs.
I've just had new discs custom made for my car (because I had no choice - but still have shiny new solid discs on a car 10% heavier than standard)- and asked the people making them (whose speciality is motorsport) whether I should take the opportunity to go grooved or drilled.
Their advice was that which you see above - and I figured that they really do know what they are talking about!!

personaly i think the greenstuff pads would suffice to give the breaking required for a stag they are not a high performance car and unless you are racing or have changed the powerunit there is no need .some drilled discs can change the way a disc will perform under duress with high temps they can distort in odd ways giving rise to problems associated with warped discs then return to normal when cool.they also tend to make horrible noises when air trapped in the holes is compressed, ask stagdad he had these problems .the grooved disc tends to clear dust and remove some heat but again all that glitters aint gold .imho the standard set up is ok with good pads if you want better brakes bin the existing and move to a lighter set up of performance 4 pot calipers and fluted discs with a much larger surface contact area (willwood/brembo) then you will get to see your tail more often.......

Thanks for the replies, I think anything other than standard is not really necessary for road use, but it's good to get some opinions from the more "spirited drivers"

Interesting to read on here, and on some other forums for different marques, how highly people rate EBC pads because they aren't well thought of on M3 forums. Horses for course maybe.

An M3 is a 3mm dia bolt / nut based metric thread, which under normal conditions would not require green stuu pads. Might need loctite.

Only if it has a right hand thread.
