Tapit clearances ok so what,s next ??????

Having recently replaced chains, tensioners & guides and refurbished water pump, I was disapointed to find that I had a tapping noise coming from around and above No 6 cylinder.
Nothing to noisy or alarming but annoying all the same, especially as I thought the chains were the root cause of the rattle originally. The rattling is now gone, but the rattle probably masked the tapping originally.

Dave (DJT) has told me that this tapping noise is not uncommon from this area. ( No 6 Cyl )
However, it got the better of me today, so removed cam cover and checked clearances once again. Absolutely spot on and well within tolerance.
I now plan to remove cam, check buckets, shims, and valve springs and that's as far as I'm going into the depths of the engine as I'm not going to pull heads off and disturb anything as the car runs very well apart from the irritating tapping noise.
Is there anything else I should check while the cam is off, or anything I should be on the look out for.
For some reason I think that the tippy tapping may be coming from the valve spring.?? but this is just a guess.
The engine ticks over at 600 revs and does not miss a beat. I don't think that it can be the valve itself, as the engine would run erratically I would think.
    Any thoughts

As you have said Mike, it's quite common. when you have the cam off check for valve guide wear by moving the valves side way's, if it appears to move try and see if it's just worn in the guide or loose in the head. a indication of worn guides is the bucket on the exhaust valves discoloured and gummed up with carbon and oil.

Mine has a slight noise sometimes in the same area which I put down to a bucket not rotating, it sorts it self out after a short while and is fine when it's fully warmed up.

Check the buckets are not rocking in the head, they tend to wear most in the middle and I have not found an engine yet where they didn't need replacing.
It is not unknown for valve guides to come loose in the head, and this can also cause a tapping noise, probably difficult to check without stripping the engine. I haven't tried it, but I would think if you push down on the top of a valve so it partly opens, then try wriggling it from side to side, it should show up any bad looseness of the guide compared with other valves. At least you know the approximate area the tapping is coming from. Use something wooden so you don't scratch the cam bucket bore, and don't ram the valve into the piston!
You should also get an idea of the relative strength of the valve springs by pushing down on them.
The first stag engine I built (from a collection of bits) had an annoying tapping from cold on random cylinders, but it went away when warmed up so I didn't fret about it too much. It quietened down after about 50,000 miles!

IMHO and after toooo many years as a mechanic there arent any engines designed in the 60's that dont have a knock, rattle rumble etc at some engine speed or under a certain load even if they've been rebuilt recently.

Certainly check and measure a good few times to be sure and safe but then accept it.

Most modern engines built to much finer tolerences with superior materials have their quirky noises at times but are so well sound deadened we dont notice.

Just trying to be reassuring if no fault can be found

Update, looks like I may have found the problem. Both cam buckets look to be worn above 6 & 8 cylinders. All others good nick. However will change them all just to make sure. Springs are good and nothing else untoward that I can see. No gunge or anything like that.
Fingers crossed this may have been the cause of that irritating tapping. Well here's hoping.
If it's not well I can live with it as I'm disturbing no more, as the beast runs way to well for that, and spring is just around the corner.

              Mike,

Be aware that if you replace the buckets on those valves you may have to re shim them to bring it all back in to tolerance.
