If it's not on the cylinder head location, you'll need eyes on stalks, a long neck, and a strong light source!

Hi all,
My log book says that my engine number is LF041495HE. Does that number make sense? The reason I ask, is that I found a number stamped where the transmission meets the engine, and that looks like LZ1237E as far as I can read it.
I'm a bit confused. Can anybody help?

Please can someone explain the text quoted by dasadrew (post no 2). Is the left hand bank the left hand if you were sitting in the car looking forward? I know this sounds stupid, but how do I recognise an exhaust port (I assume it is where a round shaped part of the manifold meets the cylinder head); and how do I know which are numbers 6 and 8? Exactly where am I looking to find it? Does anyone have an explanatory photo?

Yes, it is left hand from sitting in the car. If you look on the front of the cylinder heads they are marked lh & rh.
Cylinders on the rh bank are 1-3-5-7. Lh bank are 2-4-6-8, nos 1 & 2 being the cylinders at the front of the engine.
You are correct about the manifold so the engine number would be at the rear on the lh side. However this is only on very early cars.
The number you are looking for is stamped on the flange at the rear of the engine block behind the coil / distributor and close to the bulkhead and is usually difficult to read.
The number on your log book makes sense but the number you are reading from your engine sounds wrong.

Hi PJW,
The engine number is roughly in the area of the red box on this pic. The inlet manifold, coil and, obviously, distributor have been removed which makes seeing the engine number significantly easier !
As Pete has said, the number in your log book makes sense (although I wouldn't have thought the numbers would be preceeded by a '0').
I vaguely recollect factory reconditioned units having a different prefix, but whether that was 'LZ' I'm not sure. Others on here can help with that I'm sure.

I think the factory service exchange units start ESS or it might be EES.Ive got one in the garage but its to cold out there at the moment to go look..I know Julian Mr Softy still lives...Last edited by staginhiding; 5 February 2012, 12:51.

If your engine number is on the rear flange, then it is here. (Sorry, I'd cleaned off the area and the flash just reflects)

Thanks everybody - I've had another look and think I am looking at the engine number. I think I can see L 1237ES I have left a space where I cannot properly read a letter/number which I cannot identify! This "unidentifiable" digit, I had thought was a Z but could be an F or an E - but there is only the top "dash" of this visible! At least I think there is a "dash" there. Could it be left blank?
It is looking like my car had a "new" engine at some time, but that this was never notified to the DVLC or whatever it is now called. What are the ramifications of this? Is it a legal requirement to notify this? Could it affect my insurance?

Some 5 years ago I took my Triumph Spitfire for an MoT and was surprised when I was told that I had an incorrect engine number on the V5 - it seems that one digit had been omitted on the original registration some 20 plus year previously and only just been noticed by the MoT tester and missed by some 15 previous owners (including me) and previous MoT testers. I thought that I was in for a long admin process with letters back and forth to DVLA. I was wrong - a new and correct V5 was sent with no bother to me.
In a long winded way - I am trying to say - it may not be such a big deal as the engine change was prior to your ownership.
