Tiny bit of rust on Stag door, you know whats coming next

I have had a problem with the paint lifting, and rust creeping out from under the door to glass weatherseal for the last couple of years, and I was just going to repaint the door down to the stripes.
However, when the door was laid flat I could see the first minute signs of filler lifting over the join where new door bottoms have been fitted in the past, and from the thickness of the door bottoms I had a strong suspicion the quality of the repairs matched that of the rear quarter panels that I tackled last year

I am going to go into a dark room and beat myself repeatedly around the head with a rubber sanding block, while endlessly repeating "NEVER BUY A RESPRAYED CAR"

While I do that you can amuse youselves looking at some pictures

I don't mind cars that have been painted, provided the rust has been properly sorted first. My mistake was in buying a car that had only been painted three years. When you see reciepts for over £4600 in paintwork you hope the job has been done properly, particularly when most of the car underneath was in its original non undersealed state with only light surface rust.
Interestingly when I took my TR to be valued last week, TR Bitz recon that a TR respray (they only do bare metal) is £10,000. At £55 per hour that is not difficult.
They said it only costs about 20% more to do a proper cut out the rot job rather than just filler, as most of the work is the preparation rather than the welding. From my experience that is about right. TR's are a lot easier to work on than Stags, less double skinning
I fitted a new drivers doorskin to my TR when I bought it 20 years ago, and due to regular squirts with an oilcan, it is as rustfree as the day I fitted it which is why I am going to do the job properly.
If it wasn't for the fact that I particularly wanted a Topaz orange Stag, I would have gone for an early tax exempt car, but was put off by the fact it would need a total in and out respray.
Never mind, I know it is spot on as far forward as the B posts. Drivers door this year, passengers next (little bubble at the bottom), and in two years time no doubt I will find all the rust in the front wings. Three years from now I should have a totally rust free car

                Dave,
I think for the cost and the time involved I will go for the new door bottoms, it can be a right pain to get door bottoms straight when repairing the inner skin, I had to do both back doors on my Stag powered estate, and I am not 100% happy with the outcome (Also had to do sills, four wheelarches inner and outer, front wings and worst of all windscreen pillars which is why I didn't really want to do a full restoration on a Stag)

                    Hi Neil
I wouldnt beat yourself up, the car you bought was parked next to mine a few years ago at ND and I thought it looked really good and straight, frightening when you see what can be done with filler. At least you have the skill to put it right.

Collected a door skin and door bottom repair panel from Paddocks yesterday (they are knocking off 10% until they get their website up and running).
Managed to repair the door frame yesterday, and tonight I fitted the new skin. Tomorrow I will trial fit the door before I start painting

Nice work neil - as well as trial fitting the door window frame I would also recommend trial fitting the door handles and locking mechanisms and getting that all right before painting. Some of the recent door skins haven't quite got the handle aperture in the right place and need a little opening up to allow the handle bowl to fit and to have enough room for the required travel for the locking mechanism.

                              Neil.
Don't forget to check the gap at the top of the door if too big the window seal will not sit right and it will get dragged down by the glass as it moves.
