    Chrome trim clips

Hi all, has anyone out there ever thought of using or has used anything other than the spring clips that hold on the chrome trim that fits around the front and rear of the Stag? It strikes me as a little silly to have the bodywork all nicely painted to then apply these clips that surely scratches off some of the paint and potentially can start the corrosion process. With all the modern adhesives and sealants on the market is it not possible to fill the back of the trim with sticky stuff and fit it to the car. Would that also help prevent the ingress of water.
    your comments would be appreciated.

    Thanks

    Paul

Hi Paul, yes, this has been discussed before, so if you look in the search facility you will see some suggestions.

Hi Paul, yes, you can use Tiger Seal (ebay) Use 5 or 6 blobs, tie wrap or tape in place and leave overnight. The downside, is that it's semi-permanent, you will be able to remove the trim later, but it WILL get damaged Equally, you can fill the trim piece with waxoyle, then dribble more in after fitting. Hi Paul,

When I put mine back together I used the clips as original with the exception of the lower front strip that on many cars you see does not fit at the ends, this I fitted with an industrial product we use at work called Black Forge. I was able to achieve a perfect fit using this. I cable tied it in place through the H/light apertures whilst it cured. if you glue the rest of the trim on you will probably damage it if you have to remove it in the future for any reason. I do know a couple of owners who have stuck all theirs on but I thinks where the clips do the job use them.

        Ian.

Believe it or not Ian, I've found out why, these trims have a residual clamping action at each end despite the cut out, on the lower fronts, the part of the horseshoes that accepts the trim is very slightly too wide, the pros dry fit first, then dress that section of horseshoe with a file or a Dremel. Hang around old folk long enough and it's amazing what you can pick up (no I don't mean me) As they say, there's now't new under t'sun ! Triumph quality control strikes again ! Martin.

Makes sense martin, although some seem to fit OK. Dean car for instance! maybe something that can be addressed by mixing original and repo parts maybe!

A very early and original Stag popped a length of front chrome in a very minor collision with my car last year. The painted edge was protected by what seemed to be a fine lead tape, which prevented direct contact between clips and paint. I was told it hasn't been available for years, presumably because of the lead. Anyone got any ideas for something which might do the same job?

I've restored a Mk1 Mini and Mk 1 Consul in the past, both of which have a bit off chrome trim. Had the same worries but fitted as original (probally damaged the paint) but applied loads off waxoyl and never had a problem and trims easily remove
