Some Stags have a rubber gasket behind the headlamp bowl flange, does anyone know when this fitting started and stopped? My old girl, a '74, doesn't have them, but I've aquired 4 and I'd like to know whether to fit them or not. Any thoughts ? Martin.
Hi Dave, no, she's never had them, the front panel is sound but patinated as you would expect, and there's no residue from anything. I know that's not definitive. Martin.
Funny i was putting my headlamps back together this today and my 71 did not have them and looked like it never had, my 73 i had some years ago was fitted with them, i was thinking the same question should i buy some or not?
The original spares book was 519579 (Date unknown), it was then revised in May 1973 as 519579/A (there is a copy of this on the Heritage Motor centre DVD). 519579/B was April 1974, 519579/C was (I think) October 1976, /D I am not sure about - possibly '77. and for some reason the final one back to plain 519579 for April 1978 which is the one used for the modern reprints. (It may well be that /D is the April 1978 one, I an not sure!)
I have got a photocopy of what I believe to be the first one, the front cover is missing which is why I don't know the date, /A I have on the DVD, /B I have got /C I have my eye on on ebay at the moment, /D remains elusive, assuming that actually exists! and I have got the modern reprint.
IIRC, having worked on lots of 70's cars, they were all fitted with a rubber gasket for that type of headlamp, inc Fords, VW, etc, it was only when the design of headlamps changed, i.e. complete unit inc side lights that they changed.
As far as I can see, yours should have the gasket.
Jeff.
I only do what the voices in my wife’s head tell me to do!
