    Water Pump

At last its done and dusted, i fitted a new water pump today. the joy no water in the vee, no anti freeze smell.
The job went very well considering i didn't really know what i was doing, things of note were .. the water pump that i removed was a 12 vane pump...boll..ks... my replacement pump is a 6 vane, my engine number said it should be a 6 vane, luckily whoever fitted the 12 vane pump used a 6 vane cover, that was lucky.
The bush in the engine block, i had to well and truly muller that to get it out, the new bush did not want to go in so i persuaded it with a bit of wood and a hammer...of course you have to make sure its square ... i think you know where i am going with this, after some filing it looked a bit like a bush.
The water pump contrary to popular belief does not just drop in, it needs some persuading with worryingly and increasingly bigger hammers, very nerve racking but eventually it went down far enough so the bolt cleared the cover.
The water pump gaskets were sealed with holybluestuff but on torquing up to 20lb the gaskets split, good job i bought a double set, forget the torque wrench, used a ratchet instead, best guess probably around 19.5 lb!!
Scratched the car wing with my fly zip, the wing cover blew up and i didn't notice, about an hours tcut to put it right, then my dad thought he would see if he could knock down a brick wall with a stag door, you cant, result chipped paint, i touched it up then took off glasses, cant see it.
And thats it job done thinking of starting up a stag water pump fitting company.
All gaskets were sealed with holybluestuff, new bolts were fitted to the inlet manifold, all nuts and bolts had copper slip applied, the servo copper washers were annealed .
I will be placing a few pictures of the days events on my profile page later for anyone that's interested.
A big thank you for the people who helped me to get this job done ...Steve

        Hello Steve,

When I replaced the water pump on my Stag I first had to persuade the pump cage to come out with the help of an extractor. Then the bushing totally refused to come out. So I had to use a chissel. In the end the new water pump moved in quite easily.

By the way: Your combination of a 12 vane impeller and a 6 vane housing meant exactly "exitus" for my engine. The gap between the impeller and the housing is simply too big to end up with a working water pump. So I guess you were very, very lucky!

        Best wishes,
        Dieter.

Hello Dieter i have heard about the problems caused by using a 12 vane pump in a 6 vane housing, there are a few people on here that do run with that combination, but as for myself i have never had any overheating issues in the past, i gave the stag an extensive blast on its test run today without any problems, so as you say i was lucky for whatever reason
Its a mystery about the 12 vane pump i have every receipt for the car and nowhere is there a mention of a new pump, the pump i removed is in really good nick so i would say it is a recent replacement, just shows you cannot be sure of the history of your car...Steve

Good job Steve its a bit of an effort to get that all done but at least you now know its working well, you always seem to damage the paint when you have the car in the garage. I had a habit of keeping bits and bobs of wood in a rack above my garage door a 2 X 4 by 8 foot piece of the stuff fell on my right side rear wing and dented it cost of the wood about 4 dollars estimate cost to fix the dent 250 dollars all the wood went to the next available bonfire at the beach so after that I am going to wait until the car is finished then get a paint job or at least fix the paint.

            cheers Stuart

Hello Stuart, any damage to our cars is so annoying after so much time is spent on keeping them looking reasonable, i was trying to to be so careful but a small gust of wind must have just lifted the wing cover as i leaned over the wing, i will be able to get the scratch out with about an hours hard work,a cat scratched the same wing last year that was worse and took about a couple of hours to polish out, the dink on my door was my fault for parking to near the wall i thought i had left enough room for my dad to get out, but he must have drifted back to the war and thought he was baling out of a burning aircraft the way he flung the door open and made his exit, but i had just given his pace maker a test with blast in the stag, so perhaps he was trying to bale out!....Steve

The pump should never need heavy hammering in....if it does, there is something wrong.

The main seal can be damaged, orings & lower bushing, not to mention the roller bearing.

Turning the bolt can help to pull it down, using the helix of the skew gear.

Anyway whats done is done so all the best from here.

BTW ld parts ceramic seal facing is an excellent improvement for us all to use.

                  Yep Steve,

I didn't want to rain on your parade but having to hammer in the water pump sounded seriously worrying to me

Sorry Mate, but better to know now rather than later perhaps.

Maybe others could chime in with their 2ps worth?

                  Cheers

I would be concerned where the pump teeth meet the jackshaft teeth, they should make love willingly.

Yes thanks for that i feel a whole lot better as a professional bodger now, your just confirming what i was thinking as i was tapping the pump in, but as i had some trouble fitting the bush ( im getting old ) this did misshape and then reshape as it located into its hole, i did run a round file inside the top of the bush to remove burrs etc.
I did assume that the pump because of the bush going out of shape and then back in shape might not be perfectly round and would be a tad tight to fit, the tapping was needed for the last 10mm or less, the pump was turning as i tapped it in so i hope it will bed itself in without destroying my engine, i have covered 20 miles on the test with no noises as yet so watch this space could be a cheap stag for sale...Steve

Hello Bob they did for most of the way down just the last bit, not sure if that makes it better or not!...Steve

Hello Julian i am used to being rained on usually from a great height, as i have said it was just the last bit and i reckon the bush was out of true towards the bottom , you just get to the point of no return, but in my defence i did not have to upgrade to my sledge hammer 7lb or 14lb.
I was being so careful to get the bush in straight don't really know how it did get out of line i was only tapping it checking then tapping then check....bollo... how did that happen inferior part, or idiot fitting it we may never know..Steve

The bush is £4.20 from ld part.

As it is contributing to the skew gear mesh, its worth having an undistorted one fitted.

Anyway we're nearly all worriers here! (as far as jackshafts & water pumps go)

(excluding the external pump guys and rv8 guys!) they have a different set of problems.....ford organ transplant rejection (external) and sheared w/p cover bolts (rv8)

I really did not think i was going to have any trouble fitting the bush otherwise i would have purchased a couple of extras , i doubled up on pump gaskets and spare nuts and bolts, and only carried on because the pump was most of the way in before persuasion was required...Steve
