    Feeling Blue?

    Gents,
We are commencing the restoration of my son's Stag which according to the comission plate is 146 (Tahiti Blue) . However I got a sample of paint mixed locally by Protec paint, they used code JAE which is according to their data base is Triumph Tahiti Blue, they did not recognise the code 146. The sample of paint is darker than the paint on the car. I have attached a picture of he car in the hope that one of you recognises the colour. The paint in the engine bay, in the boot, under the bonnet pad, and in the gearbox tunnel is all the same colour as the photograph.

    Thanks in advance,
    Raoul

The car looks like Tahiti Blue to me! Perhaps you should take the car there and let me try and match it better.

Yes, looks like Tahiti Blue to me too, Looked up the reference for JAE which is Tahiti Blue although JAG is Pageant Blue-could your paint mixer have looked up the wrong formula?

          Hi Julian,

I remain somewhat confused about (amongst all sorts of things ) Triumph colours.

Your chart shows 75 as Brooklands green however I understood that 75 was British Racing Green whereas Brooklands was (IIRC) HAE. So, is the chart correct for Tahiti ?

Raoul, this is a subject close to my heart as my car is code 75 - as you can see from what I've said above, that's BRG and my Heritage Certificate says BRG. However I reckon it's been resprayed Brooklands.

Anyway, the whole point of me saying this is that when I needed my hardtop painted, my bodyshop simply matched the colour to the car was and I reckon they made a perfect match. So, a good paint person should be able to match your colour - whatever it is !

          Cheers

          Julian

Two of my books show 75 as British Racing Green, but no mention of Brooklands Green, I think the Stag at Gaydon might be Brooklands Green an Olive type colour, anybody confirm?

              Hi Raoul
I have used Autopaint (St Helens) for my paint, though mine is Sapphire Blue. It matches perfectly and they supplied the paint in both cans with catalyst (two pack) and in aerosols, also a touch up bottle.
              Their number is 01744 818102, website www.auto-paint.co.uk
I just gave them the Triumph number.
              regards Barry

Yep, I can confirm that. I went up there a couple of weeks ago mainly to look at it. (Rubbish pics, I'm afraid).

                Cheers

BOL 88V has the most awful paint (true to original) I saw it before it had its paintwork redone....it had runs from the factory!

iirc its colour is not at all olive.

If you are happy with the car colour as it is, I would match it with a colour chart that the paint shop will have, whatever that colour or code that may be. That is how all repairs are done otherwise it could look like Jason's dream coat. Ok if a total respray though.

Still Tahiti Blue but could have faded over the years unless had a more recent re spray.

                      Jeff.

JAE is the code for Tahiti blue from 1977 on and 146 is the code for Tahiti blue from 1969 to 1977 (It was available across the Triumph range in various years and most likely in various shades too! and in March 1977 the paint codes changed from numerical to alpha codes)
