    Clunking noise and juddering

    Hi all,

Its like trace the new fault with my stag at the moment. Fixed the ignition, then the blocked rad now I have a new problem.

Drove for 2 hours on the motorway yesterday with no problems (including sitting in traffic for half an hour in the heat with no overheating - yey!) then 1 mile from home while slowing down a hill I felt something clunk. Then when I accelerated there was a funny noise. At first it sounded like an exhaust gasket blowing but it soon became a lot louder. Its only on acceleration or on overrun when I let off the power. Also there is a juddering at low speed and while turning.

Drove it straight into the garage and put it on stands. Had a play and couldn't see anything obvious. There does seem to be very slight play in the passenger side halfshaft but only half a mm or so, I couldn't think this would cause the problem. I can turn the propshaft about a 1/6 turn before the rear wheels start turning though, and about the same on the wheels (i.e. I can turn a wheel about a 1/6 turn before the propshaft moves).

Does this sound like my diff has given up? Is there anything else I should check before I pull it out. It was leaking oil which I topped up last week after clearing the breather, when I got underneath again last night there was a lot of oilunder the diff.

    Cheers

    Harve,

This sounds like another diff problem. B***er cylinder heads. SOCTFL should be looking at this issue!

I would check closely the front diff mounting/bearing carrier 217984. They have been known to break and there are recommended reinforcements for them. They are readily available from Stag breakers and, if lucky, this may be all you need. They are not difficult to change, but it would be helpful to have assistance.

Righty, I've run it on axle stands with the rear in the air. Have a couple of questions

The clunking is really loud now, like a hammer hitting metal, definately in time with the main propshaft rahter than half shafts, and its coming from the diff area rather than the gearbox/overdrive. I'm guessing its this front nose bearing thingy. CAn that be replaced on its own or should I replace the whole diff. Quite tempted by the BMW conversion but have wedding to save for!!!

THere's oil all over the underside of the diff so I guess its leaked most of its oil and killed a bearing.

While idling in 4th the passenger side wheel spins very slowly and I could stop it with my hand, whereas the drivers side was spinning like mad and I wouldn't want to get my hand near it. Is it normal for the wheels to spin at such different speeds or could the passenger side wheel bearing or brake be sticking?

Hi Harve have a look at this post http://stagownersclub.mywowbb.com/forum1/626.html

Dave I agree this needs to be looked at, I know a company who still make the Hillman Hunter crown wheel and pinion for Iran so new Stag/2500 ones shouldn't be a problem as the machinery would be the same! All we need then is Timken/NSK or similar bearings and some reliable to assembly them into the old castings.

I've taken the diff out and taken the front extension off. The extension (with the drive flang on seems to rotate freely with no noises.

The diff outputs rotate freely, i.e. if I turn an output flange the other side turns the other way freely. However when I turn the input flange it sticks once every rotation, I can hardly turn it past the sticky bit. Also looking at the picture hopefully attached it looks like there should be some sort of oil seal (part no 137346) which looks to be absent! I can see the roller bearings -I'm guessing theseal either was never fitted or dissolved away. The Breather on top was well and trully gunked up so I guess that was the root cause of my issues.

Now, can the bearings in the nose be replaced easily, or should I just go ahead and buy a refurbed unit? Anyone had any experience?

          Cheers

Just hope you haven't got bits like i had flaoting around in there.

Before any wise guys (Kev i'm looking at you)mentions the 20p it's for size and didn't come out of the diff.

I would get your diff rebuilt with new bearings and C & P then you know it has been done and not buy a unit you have no history of!!!

Sheepdip knows a good place hopefully he will advise where he had his done.

Ha, if only the diff started spitting out money, that would be great!

Yeah might get it refurbed, I know of a gearbox place near where I live, can a general gearbox repair place do it or should I look for a Triumph/Classic specialist? Anyone know of a decent place in the south west?

It seems like the gears themselves are ok, there's no clunking when I turn it it just kind of binds on part of the rotation.

                    Hi Harve

The binding is probably the bearing picking up due to lack of lubrication!!!

I don't know if a gearbox place would have the special tools to do the diff but it's worth a go.
