    BMW 6 speed gear box??

I'm refurbishing a 1977 stag, manual overdrive with a ropey gearbox, I'm replacing the gearbox, prop shaft and rear differential, with a 2010 3 series BMW six speed gear box, prop shaft and differential, has anybody else done this? what problems might I run in to?

Interesting ,how far have you got?whats the fit of the main shaft of the gearbox into the crank bush like?do you think you will have to machine the end of the shaft or machine the bronze bush?I'm thinking of changing the MOD box for something else but haven't decided what to try.I already have E30 rear end which works well.Keep us up to date when you get it working .

I spoke to the late Adie Turner about the 6 speed box. He basically said that 6 forward gears was unnecessary with a V8, that 6 gears was more for engines with narrow power bands and economy.
Saying that, if one could be found with an appropriate gear set i would consider it!

Isn't the standard MOD box effectively 6 gears?

I'm just starting with it, I have all the parts and components, and have worked out what i need to do, i need to modify the bush, also remove 3 inched of the bell housing from the BMW gear box, using the original starter motor and fly wheel, which needs to be drilled and tapped using the BMW clutch assembly. the only thing i haven't worked out is the speedo drive.

If your using bmw diff it will have a speedo sensor so you could get the original speedo fitted with modern electronics to work with it ,I know of one company that can do this.

Yes but you need to do a lot of switch twiddling. I think the Stag has such power in the engine that an even higher gear could be used for cruising. I frequently drive in 4th and OD even at 30, which is not much above idle speed really, with no problems and then just a flick of the switch if a bit more power is needed.

Perhaps a change of diff would suit? Some are using the 3.45 from a saloon.
