    Rear suspension gaiters

    Hi,

I have been reinstalling my engine and gearbox this week end and I have noticed that the rear half shaft gaiters (the small ones over the expanding joint) are split!!!
The half shafts have been replaced not so long ago I believe, these were replaced by the look of them also and the larger ones as they look quite new.
My question is, can I get a split type replacement or do I need to strip the half shafts down to fit new ones??

    Thanks in advance

Hi Tony, you only have to undo the 4 bolts on the diff flange and you can pull the female shaft off and then replace. 15mins tops each side

      Hi Andrew,

Thanks for the info, I had visions of striping the whole thing down, although that what I will do in the summer to replace the bushes in the rear end.
I will get some gaiters ordered for next week.

      Cheers

just take care if you dont know the shaft has a "king" spline ie one bigger than the others.if you dont aligne it you will never get it back together.mega frustration!---done it! good luck.

I've just fitted these, they're about a fiver each from J Paddocks.....it looks like cable ties are to be fitted to each end of these to secure them,I was hoping there was a more secure fixing that could be used, anybody know of any thing better than cable ties?

Those Gaiters don't last very long at all. (Generally - I am not dissing Paddocks!). I have replaced mine three times in four years!

Cable ties seem to work fine. They outlast the Gaiters anyway!

Just my opinion, cable ties do provide a secure fixing for drive shaft boots and if of a good quality will last as long as a rubber boot. Alternatively a local motor factors should be able to provide a stainless steel band for you

Don't waste your money on halfshaft gaiters, as Stagnjag says they last about a year. Buy some universal steering rack gaiters and cut them down to suit. Cable ties are fine, the rack gaiters are far more flexible and will last many years

I don't have these small gaiters fitted, but then I do have new greasable drive shafts with a screw cap where they slide into each other!!

                    Hi Tony

I have recently noticed an issue with the gaiters on my front suspension. They were replaced about three years ago and the car has barely done 100 miles since.

You problem and mine make me even more convinced of the shoddy quality of some of the products around these days.

                    Regards

                    Dave

                      Hi All,

                      Thanks for the replies.

I think I will go with what Neil has said and use the steering gaiters cut down.

Jason you mention a different type of UJ on your car, is there a link to look at this type of half shaft on the web??

Tony. I bought my drive shafts about 3 years ago on ebay. The guy who sold them is a forum member but can't remember if it was tonyh or tony ph1(something like that, they say the memory goes 1st!!) Basically, there is a grease nipple on the inboard side (diff side) and where they slide together is the same sort of screw cap with seal as the propshaft. I have also fitted greasable UJs.
