What glue for a soft top

    Hi Guys

I bought my 1972 MK1 on 1st March this year and decided to have it resprayed in Fushia Metal Flake. The hardtop came out great, the rest looked like someone had thrown up down the sides. It ran everwhere. The sprayer blamed the paint supplier for lack of information, apparantly, he should have used a special lacquor that suspends the flakes.

The good news is that it's now a Cherry Black Metalic, (shame, I was looking forward to the ribbing). It looks black in dull weather but a beautiful cherry red when the sun hits it.

I plan to collect it this coming Saturday and drive from the garage in Liskeard to Reading. (AA card at the ready). My garage is full of new goodies just waiting to be fitted, one of which is a new mowhair hood. What glue do you suggest I use to fasten the hood. I've printed of the the technical spec from the site and once the carpets and other bits have been fitted I'll give it a go.

Any tips will be welcome and I'll happily pay someone to help me fit it.

    Tony

ps. Anyone going to Wallingford on Sunday 11th May?

You would have to use a contact adhesive, but be warned it will not be plain sailing.
That Fushia hardtop on the car should look good:shock:

      Hi Bob

Will ordinary contact adhesive do the job? The hard top has also been repainted but I'll have the photos

      Thanks for the reply

Good idea to paint or have the frame powder coated before you start.

Make sure that the frame is not bent, works as it should and the pivots are well lubricated.- especially the ones where the side rails pivot on the front rail. The seals behind the B pillars are fitted after the hood, so make sure you leave room when adjusting a bare frame.

Ordinary Evostick is fine, start by gluing theback to the hoop which sits on the tonneau and work forwards.Note that the flap above the rear windowis longer and is glued so that the hoop can move. Nothing looks worse than a slack wrinkled hood, so make sure that it isdrum tight -achieved when gluing the front to the front rail. Finish by gluing behind the B pillars to geta little tension on the sides.

When it all fits, goes up and down ok and you are happy with it, pop rivet the seal carriers on and fit the seals. check the seals touch the tonneau and adjust the back hoop slightly if required.

Don't rush the job, if you've had enough leave it and go back later.

        Best of luck,

        Mark.

Tony, I see you are in Reading so I will look out for you (I'm in Twyford) Fitting a new hood is a job I will be doing soon as well and I understand it is not an easy job. I found a very good writeup on fitting a Stag Hood (see attached).

Over the years I have accumulated a host of special tools so if you are stuck contact me.

            Hi Guys

Thanks for the info. Seems like a difficult time consuming job.

Alan, I live in Three Mile Cross so not too far from you, I'll let you know how it goes. I plan to photograph each step so if there's a next time I will remember the pitfalls.

This is a great board. Thanks everyone.

My hood does not sit flush on the Tonneau cover, how do I adjust it to sit down flush on this cover?

                Hi Stuart,

Some adjustment can be gained by slackening the three studs (bolts) either side of the back hoop to get the sides down onto the tonneau. To get the back to sit tight down adjust the length of the central locking pin (the one with the spring).

                Mark.

Thanks Mark do you mean the bolts shown on the bottom rail and the other adjustment in the spring shown in the smaller section?

Hi Stuart, the bolts are the GHF117 (6 off) in the cut away on the left. These can be seen on the inside of the back hoop (rail) that sits on the tonneau with the hood up. These screwinto a captive plate 622476 and allow both length and angle adjustmentof the hoop in relation tothe dog-leg piece thatattaches to the main pivot point. This adjustment allows the sides to to be adjusted to sit on the tonneau.

The central locking pin is part 715075. The plunger has a slot in the end - the length can be adjusted by slackening the lock nutand screwing the pin in or out.

There are other adjustments points where the frame mounts to the body but be careful with these as you may end up worse off and wish you hadn't started!

                    best of luck,

                    Mark.

I too bought my 1972 Mk1 Stag on March 1st and live in Sonning Common (5 miles north of you) - how scary is that!

I will probably go to Wallingford on Sunday

Booked my train ticket for this Saturday to collect the car from Cornwall. Guess what, I received a phone call today to say that it had failed the MOT and needed a new steering shaft top bearing ??? , had a leaking power steering pump and various other bits and pieces. Should be ready a week Monday.

I don't know whether to laugh, cry or just go and getpi**ed. Maybe all three. Are these cars mythical creatures, do they really exist?

If you are going to Wallingford on Sunday, look out for the Stagless Harley Rider !
