I have just got in from having the MM recovered to the local garage, and wouldn't mind some thoughts on a problem I had ahead of them telling me what they think.
As you may remember it's auto and has a GM180 3 speed box in it, that was brand new when installed by the PO and will have done about 8k miles since I am guessing.
First time out in it today since beginning of Jan and all going well, then I started to think that it wasn't changing up and down through the box quite as normal. After a fcouple more miles I thought it definitely wasn't, and seemed to have got into 3rd but was revving more highly than usual so acting as though it was in 2nd. But I then went up a hill and it wouldn't drop down, still reving a bit high and power really trailing off, so I pulled over. Probably I drove it about 5 miles from when I waspretty sure it wasn't right.
So when stationary, I put it in Park which engaged fine and quite a bit of smoke was coming up through the selector and out from under the car - friction I would assume. The gear selector was still capable of moving but it didn't seem to want to select a gear but would go into Park ok. With the engine off it would still go in and out of Park fine, and the rear wheels aren't seized.
Hopefully it's not the box itself, but I would be keen to hear what others think?
