    SOCTFL Panels

I have just had a coversation with James Paddock about a front wing outer wheel arch repair panel which I thought was a SOCTFL panel.
They tell me that they do not believe there is a SOCTFL panel for this part however Robsport have said that there is but they do not have them at the moment.

Is there a complete list of all the SOCTFL items available as I cant find it.Would it be good idea to have even half a page in the Mag each month dedicated to the SOCTFL items and the suppliers that stock them.

    Hi Sam,

The SOCTFL advert in the mag shows ALL of the parts that they have funded. They show "Front Inner Wheel Arches and Arch Extensions"

Seems surprising to me that there are only about a ten parts yet they've been in existence for 20 years .

    Cheers

    Julian.

There is a SOCTFL website: www.soctfl.co.uk but it doesn't have a lot of info. It was last updated in September 2011 and says more will be added 'in a few weeks'

Considering what SOCTFL have done for us, and what they're still doing, I would be very reluctant to call them an embarrassment ! More info would be good, but don't forget, the Forum is not the be all and end all of SOC, we're much luckier than most clubs, chat to owners of 60s on Vauxhalls, Healeys and many others ! Martin.

SOCTFL is run by volunteers lets not forget that! I would imagine the the design and re manufacture of the heads took up sh*t loads of time, I don't think anyone from SOCTFL would have been paid for this time. I don't think it's an embarrassment, i think they're good for us!! I know I couldn't give the time needed!

Certainly not an embarrassment, we are far better off with SOCTFL than without it. I know of Classic owners of other marques who cast envious eyes at the work that SOCTFL has done, and continues to do. Sure, some more info would be a positive thing, but it does not devalue the parts which they have worked hard to keep available for us.

SOCTFL have to be applauded for the work they have done and continue to do, but their biggest weakness seems to be communication.

Two items spring to mind that are missing from their ad in the magazine - wiper blades and the cylinder heads. (I gather the wiper blades are available again?)

Also Anyone know the results of the survey regarding repair panels for the hard top?

ive fitted a outer front wheel arch on by brothers car they fit ok, but i would not fit one again, fit the whole wing, usually the front corner where it meets the front valance goes rusty, and the front outer arch does not cover that area.

May I suggest that those members who consider that the SOCTFL is an "Embarrasment to the Club" might like to email the chairman, Mike Allen, whose address is in the front of the magazine. I'm sure he would be pleased to hear why they feel that way. I suspect that the reason that there are only 15 parts listed in their advertisement is because that is a many parts as they have received requests to assist with. That is how the Club has set up their operation. There are other parts which have become available with their technical assistance, but if they have ultimately been funded by the company selling them, it would not be correct to have them listed in the advert.

To try to diffuse any situation brewing here....

Thanks to our tooling fund and its volunteers, we have a great range of previously unavailable parts at more than reasonable prices..... thankyou soctfl.

I suppose its fair to suggest that some people are able to be close to the forum, whilst others are out there trying to get parts made?

I would like to know what has happened to the door handle chrome bowl tooling that means they are no longer available though?

Or even if the club is able to assist in any repairs to the tools?

I think Rimmers & or their suppliers had the tooling, but they cant tell me what the situation is, can anyone shed any light?

Sorry for all the questions, I need a right hand bowl!

Hmmmm... not sure whether that defused anything, it did make it more diffuse though .

All the time there does not seem to be criticism so much about what the SOCTFL have done, it's more about the apparent chaos and lack of transparency surrounding the operation. The last time this came up some bright spark suggested that one of the "moaners" should volunteer for to tackle this problem. It's difficult to knock together some publicity if no-one at the core is saying anything about what is going on.

For heaven's sake, if it is a matter of putting a bunch of eMails and scribbled notes into a transparent and web-suitable form I'll gladly volunteer if someone can get hold of such material or even a recorded interview with SOCTFL, Mike Allen or WHY!

At the moment, we have a topsy turvy world of windscreen frames being imported from Australia and no further word heard, we had recently a big shout out for parts on loan or donation and no feedback on the results of that, we have calls for ideas and then it all goes silent, we have a brand new fully operational SOCTFL website with less information than there has ever been in the past... any minute now I'm sure there will be a big hare with a top hat running across.

Guys, I'd even be prepared to fly across, rent a car, and start touring and ticking off boxes on what is happening on the different projects, but without some sort of lead to follow this would be a wild goose chase.

The really sad downside, using the heads as an example, is that the overhead (no pun intended) costs can never be amortised to sensible levels if you don't sell any units. Honestly, we've got crypto stuff at work where the security level is less tight than the cordon surrounding these Stag heads. My view is that if these heads were publicly announced all around the planet, there would be a demand which would bring their price down; even old original heads (inherently poorly manufactured with porosity and flash) are going for 4-figure sums.

Nevertheless old chap, thanks aw'fully for the points you raise!

What I really meant to come across, is how grateful we should be for what we have in our soctfl.

The heads were never going to be an quick / easy / smooth project.

How many clubs / people have got involved in major engine casting re-tooling?

How many people are aware of the time taken vast sums of money taken for the car industry to bring new parts to market? eg:- Vw dsg 40 years.+ € millions

You been taking those Harvest Festival pills again?

I don't subscribe to the "just be grateful for what you have" group, but I fully agree there is a world of difference between saying "That was rubbish" and saying "That was a good start, but I think we can take it further, and I have a few positive suggestions to make to achieve this"
