The old girl is up on axle stands. The offside axle interestingly is not a circlip type but the nearside is anyway the nearside rear wheel bearing has a bit of a wobble/play. Is it possible to tighten it or is it a replacement job. Some tips would muc appreciated. Thanks. Also how on earth do you change the diff oil without a drain plug. Siphon?

My understanding is that they did not put a drain plug in the diff casting, this is an easy fix if you are taking the diff out.
Remove the diff from car
Remove the rear plate wash out old oil
Stuff the diff with paper ,rags etc to stop metal chips going into the diff.
If you have a hand drill you can do it otherwise have a machine shop drill and tap a drain plug hole in the boss on the casting at the back close to where the cover fits a 1/2 pipe from memory, sorry it's a 3/8 NPT pipe plug mermory fading.
If you do not want to do this then its a really messy job in which case you still have to remove the back plate so you may as well remove the diff and save all the agro.
They had 2 types staked and circlip type somebody changed one. You can adjust the bearing but you will need a couple of spanners to do this, special tools as they say no doubt you will get more information from the forum. You can get replacement axles check out the usual suppliers.

It is possible to reduce the endfloat to buy a small amount of time.
(maybe not worth the effort though as the bearing will soon develop more endfloat.)
Use this time to get another shaft built and ready to swap over the whole shaft assembly.
A puller is required to separate the shaft taper in order to do it yourself. (with the correct puller the job is ok. forget trying to improvise on this job.... the parts will be damaged)
2off 52mm a/f spanners help to set the endfloat. (can't be done on the car)
t.d. fitchet sell the cheapest rebuilt shaft / hub iirc

This is not really a DIY job unless you have access to the items below or have someone close to you who can help.
The spanners need to be 52mm across the flats and maximum 10mm thick, the steel plate is bolted to the hub flange as a stiffener with the wheel studs removed, the other part is the thread protector for the drive shaft thread to allow the press to push down on, the last set I done took 12 ton's to let go.

The puller I have works well on the drive flange.
Its available to use in Leamington / Birmingham though. (too heavy to post)

One thing to bear in mind with putting a drain plug in the bottom of the diff is that it is the normal place to put a trolly jack. It would make a mess if it fractured the casing.

I am at work right now I have added this to my diff
Store your photos and videos online with secure storage from Photobucket. Available on iOS, Android and desktop. Securely backup your memories and sign up today!
try this link I have pictures of my diff overhaul on it
or http://s903.photobucket.com/albums/a...lkey2003/Stag/
take a look
I also made an adapter to help install or remove the diff. If you use a hex type pipe plug and tap the hole right then the plug will be flush with casting and not be in the way of the jack.
