It's likely to be a duff battery, but poking about today I discovered that a wire attached to the +ve terminal lead (guess it goes to the aux fan?) was badly worn with the wire likely resting on a metal part. Here's my daft, hoping to save myself a few quid and avoid the aggro of taking out the steering pump question: Could that wire have been causing a short and draining the battery of juice? I have taped it up and put the battery back on charge so I guess I'll find out in a few days, but I'm curious to know if for once, for one unique moment in time, I stand a chance of having identified and rectified a problem...

Battery draining problem

If you mean it was straight off the battery Richard Yes but it's more likely to have been arcing (Is it burnt or black) with the the potential for all sorts of nasty's if it's not fused.
If a battery is run below 10.5 volts then it's days are numbered and it never fully recovers. I'm not sure why but have been told this by some seriously clued people in the industry when we were trailing AGM spiral cell technology at work last year.
Have you checked your alternator! if the diode pack fails that will do it.

I have fitted a battery isolator so that if the car is going to be dormant then anything like immobilisers radios etc won't be draining the battery. They only cost a few quid. Another thing I use sometimes is a solar panel that feeds through the cigar lighter so that if don't want to isolate the battery, it gets a trickle charge. I treat with suspicion any little leads that are connected directly to the battery, fused or not.

Hi Richard,
If you have a small multimeter, read the Practical Classics article on Basic Electrical Faultfinding, February 2012 issue, page 93. Point 14 tells you how to check for a parasitic drain on your battery and how to detect which service is causing it. If it is a drain, then finding it might save you buying a new battery!
With best wishes,
Duncan, Skye.
