HELP I have a hunted borg warner 35

Overnight it throws oil out of the breather tube but not when it's running has anyone else experienced this phenomena ???? The only thing I can put it down to is that the gear box is overfilled SO could someone please measure their BW35 dipstick for me mine is 14 1/2 ins or 36mm not including the hookie bit where you stick your finger in. I'me just wondering if mine's too short (story of my life) Cheers Graham

Might be the torque converter draining back to the box.

The only thing is Bob the breather pipe runs right at the top of the bulkhead so it's 10ins above the top of the bell housing so bearing in mind this only does this when the engine off (no pump working) i've got tqf defiying the laws of gravity spooky

        Hi Graham

Is it coming out of the end of the pipe? the pipe on mine was so perished and was actually loose on the gearbox fitting.
Since putting a new pipe on I've had no problems, before that I always had tqf on the floor after a few days of no use.
You also need to check the level within a few seconds of switching the engine off.

Borg Warner Automatic Transmission Fluid Level Check- Stag

        September, 1972

Due to fluid splash and frothing in the dipstick tube on Borg Warner automatic transmission units, it is very often difficult to obtain consistent fluid readings.

As a result of this, a new fluid level checking procedure is recommended as follows:

Run the vehicle at least five miles or until the transmission unit has reached its normal operating temperature, then park the vehicle on level ground, apply the handbrake and move the selector lever to 'P' (Park). Switch off the engine and within a half a minute check the fluid level with the engine switched off.

        Cheers
        Steve

Hi Steve, yes my friend it's coming out the end (and it's doing my head in) because it does'nt do it every time and yes its a new pipe so at the moment its got me beat I can feel a gallon of petrol and an insureance claim comming on. Graham

Have you tried not topping it up, mine seemed to find it's own level. It tended to "slip" and not drive off in first when the level was low.

Mine does this occasionally, it comes up the dipstick tube and then runs down. Make sure the breather pipe is higher than the dip stick tube, it should be clipped on the bulkhead and run over the top of the servo.

I find with mine it does it after a long run when its nice and hot, and as you say just happens magically in the garage when your not there.

I have found that if you let it find its own level and as long as it shows on the dipstick somewhere then it tends not to happen.

Hi Steve, yes I topped it up yesterday (as per book) I put 1ltr in (thats all I had) that put the level half way between low&full drove the car spot on no probs parked in on the drive went out this morning (difficult to be exact) but I recon I mopped up about 1/2 a ltr. That's why I need to know the length of the dipstick (to rule this out) mine looks like it might have messed about with. Cheers Graham

                      Graham,
I've got exactly the same problem with my Stag; I have a Mk 1 Stag with a BW 35 auto box. I can run it, park it on the drive and no drip but then when I look next morning there is a major leak on the garage floor. At the moment I'm just filling it up with fluid and living with it until I can work out what is the best way forward. Looking at the forum this issue seems to be not unusual for BW35 boxes and I can live with a few drops of fluid but I'd love to know what the solution to this problem is.

I found that if you check the fluid like it states the level will be good. Get somebody to turn of the engine quickly insert the dipstick, dry and the level should be just above the first mark or have the battery terminal loose disconnect it and then check as above. I had the same thing when I first got the car twice the fluid ended up on the floor. If the fluid is to high get a lenght of clear plastic hose and attach a 50 or 100ml syringe the plastic bit and insert the plastic tube down into the gearbox and suck it out or use the breather pipe by lowering and let it drain a bit. Its a pain but once I set the level in mine I never had aproblem with it.This car is not an every day driver mostly just on the week end.
I measured the fluid from the end of the stick the car had been sitting a few hours it was about 65mm from the end almost 30 mm past the fill line.

                          cheers Stuart
