Define firm - - - extremely - very - a bit - not very - limp - dissolved and dropped off years ago ? I would expect a little more pressure if you've sorted a leak. Stop being a typical Stag owner and DON'T WORRY ! Martin.

Thanks Martin for prompt reply , did nearly mention paranoia!! "Firm" hard but not solid.

My top hose is as rigid as a scaffolding tube (even when engine is cold) and not caused any problems!!!!!!!!!!!

Forgot to say its been laid-up for nearly 30yrs

Fossilised!!! I was thinking preserved or conserved and good for another 40yrs!! Dont tell me i have to spend another £40 on hoses. My plan was £100, 8 weeks and back on the road again. I thought a good dose of methynol based anti-freeze would sort it?

You used to be able to get Methyl Alcohol anti-freeze, it was inflammable, I recall bleeding the cooling system on a Renault 16 and it caught fire, the owner was a Gas Board engineer and had an extinguisher in the boot, thank God, it was one hell of a fire. Martin.

I don't want to be the angel of doom, but when my head gasket went the pressure made the hose solid and the lid on the expansion bottle came off like a cork out of a bottle of champagne.

                          Hi Paul.
Is your coolant in your expansion bottle rising when the car is getting to normal temp and then returning to its original level when its cooled down after 7 or 8 hours if so you should be alright because air in the system would prevent this and would show the coolant staying at the same height as when its up to temperature.
What I would reccomend to anyone is a block tester as mentioned on here a few times,my mate was having trouble yesterday with his Alfa Spyder(1997) overheating, the blue liquid turned to yellow with the first draw of air through the liquid as he forgot to put any anti freeze in just before that cold snap,it may be a cracked head.
