E Zero Fuel-Total

I have been buying ethanol free premium unleaded from my local Total garage after seeing something about Total being the only company to have at least some regions free of the dreaded E in the club mag. The local manager confirmed this to be true. I have just been down for my top up only to be told that all Total garages are being taken over by BP so I presume that will be that. Does using Super unleaded solve the problem and does the pence per mile work out about the same or better?

BP are one of the highest users of Ethanol, best bet I've found is Shell Super which is rated at 99 octane, but it still has 5% Ethanol content. The problem is that the Ethanol content is due to rise to 10% shortly everywhere.

How does BP produce it's high ethanol content? Have they not flogged off all their UK refineries? The last one to go was Grangemouth in Scotland. I see that Shell has sold Stanlow refinery and that the buyers are already in trouble financially. Whichever area you are in, all the brands get their petrol from the same source.

When I was driving my Stag down here 11 months ago, all I could find on the motorways was E10 and the warning notices on the pumps spooked me - "contact the manufacturer to make sure this stuff is Ok for your car". So I pulled off the motorway and filled up with normal stuff at a local supermarket. How much longer will we be able to do that I do not know.
