    Any tips for fitting new rear hub / driveshaft assembly?

    Just taken delivery of a pair of new hubs/driveshaft assemblies (courtesy of Arthur Smith at Stag Tech).
    Any tips regarding their fitting would be appreciated - appears relatively straightforward.

    Quite simply, as you say it's a simple swap over job, just don't go too mad with tightening the hub/backplates nuts as they can strip quite easily and you will then need to helicoil the stud holes.

      As Ian says, be careful you don't strip the threads in the trailing arm. Torque wrench is essential. I tend to build up the torque gradually and evenly so there isn't one stud taking much more torque than another.

      In my experience the diff end of the drive shaft won't pass through the trailing arm so you will have to seperate the drive shaft into it's two pieces. Attach the outer part to the trailing arm first, then slide the inner part back on the splines and bolt it up to the diff. Be careful you don't pick up any muck on the exposed splines - small plastic bag over the end will do.

        I just had an exchange drive shaft/hub delivered this morning. It is in the toughest shrink wrap that I have ever seen. I'll need a chainsaw to get it off! The gaiter has come as a seperate item, so I assume I'm going to have to split the drive shaft to fit it. However, if as Dave says that you have to split it anyway to fit the shaft, then no problem, but the ROM makes it sound much easier, as it does on many other tasks. It seems odd that you can buy an assembly that you have to dis-assemble to fit it! I suppose I may as well change the diff seal on that side whilst I'm at it. My local garage has a press.

        I am slowly finding Stag designs a bit complicated.

        The supplier wanted £56 to send it to me in France by UPS, which I thought was a bit OTT. Just below that price was a box to tick for £14 for road delivery. So I ticked that as I was not in any hurry. It was ordered Saturday, dispatched Monday and arrived this morning. I very much doubt if UPS could have bettered that.

          I didn't have to split my shafts to replace them, maybe I was just lucky?

            I had the same problem with the shrink wrap - took nearly 1/2 an hour to remove!! Yes, the ROM does make it sound easy - starting to have second thoughts whether to have a go now!

              The best tip I can give you is have a go, and give someone a shout if you get stuck, or it starts to go a bit pear shaped!

              It isn't really a horrible job.

                Cheers Dave. I'm determined to give it a go - I'm more concerned about dismantling the brakes and getting them back together as they're something I've never really been confident tackling in the past. Got to start somewhere I suppose!

                  Hi.

                  You don't need to dismantle the brakes, all you need to do is take off the disc clips that hold the shoes to the back plates, this will allow you to part the shoes a little to get the hub flange through the gap. you will also need to probably de-adjust them when you put it back to get the drum on. It's not a difficult job at all.

                        I removed my existing driveshafts and replaced with Datsun shafts, both were done without having to dismantle the units. They will pass through in one piece.

                            Supplier now says gaiters are now separate because they were arriving split.
