    zinc & classic oil claims

Just been boning up on this zddp oil stuff and unless ive got something wrong all is not what it appears.

Just been looking around at some of the datasheets, so im looking at facts not claims. Currently using comma oil, which is
0.1% zddp; which aint bad in the scheme. Whats interesting is alot of the "classic" expensive oils seem to have lower zddp
values than some of the bog standard oils (confused.com). Also read a blog somewhere than VR1 had changed its zddp and in fact
had taken the values of its datasheet; which unless im missing something appears to be the case.

So in short Im really confused by the recognised fact that zddp helps and yet many of the "branded" oils aimed at this
market aint deliverying reality in facts. Like I say I could have missed something, but I have done some home work.

More of interest is checking the comma sonic datasheet, this is either 0.15 or 0.2% zddp. Im not wedded to any oil.

    Interested on views on facts.

Nigel, in this world of over-advertising facts are often very thin on the ground. Well done for spotting that incidentally I have been using Comma Classic for some time, and I still think its a good oil).

A good website and forum for boning up on oil facts, myths and data is Bob is the Oil Guy (bobistheoilguy.com)

Cheers guys. Had a read around that website, loads of info. Spent an hour browsing thr' info and interesting how it throws some light
        against long held beliefs.
        1) Why do alot of people keep saying there is no way you should use synthtic oil in stags
        2) The focus on upper end viscocity (and oil pressure), while ignoring the cold start flow

Im seriously thinking of going synthetic or semi for the engine, and probably going lower in viscocity rating - 10/30w. Im more concerned
about mineral oil thickness when cold. One of the detailed research sections on this website concludes that there is not a huge difference in
viscocity between a 30w & 50w (mineral or synthetic), but the implications at the lower end on mineral oils is very significant.

Please someone shoot down my thinking; am i daft?

I do not think anyone is saying not to use synthetic oil in the Stag but more to keep to a viscosity that the engine was designed for - ie 20/50. You can get synthetic 20/50 if you want to. Millers for example.

There are plenty of self-appointed, auto-didactic tribologists around - one will be along soon I'm sure!

I reckon 15W50 would also be OK. Mobil 1's Fully Synthetic Motorsport is a very good oil of this type. Cheap it is not but it has been proven many a time to be a good oil.

FWIW I use Millers in my Stag, although in previous classics Unipart 20W50 did not seem too bad an oil.

When using engine oils thinner than 20w cold in a Triumph V8, expect (more) oil leaks.

Just started using the Valvoline VR1 (& soc discount at euro car parts) .....seems ok so far.

There seems to be quite a bit of info regarding the zinc content of VR1, which means its zinc content may be similar to oils which the engine was developed(!) with.

If you are tempted to use an additive, Activ8 seems to have the most convincing properties. (no connection)

Whilst I do agree with you Julian (I have used 20W50 in most old BL tat I have owned) I thought that 10W50 was also an accepted grade back in the day (or at least it was according to my Stag handbook ).

All good input. How does this SOC discount work, as there's a europarts near me and very handy.

Nigel I ordered online to get 25% discount on oil form ECP. There's another thread but basically go online order your oil put MAR25CP at the checkout stage (theres a box for vouchers or coupons cant remember exactly how it is labelled) and get free delivery. Doesn't work in shop. My oil arrived yesterday VR1 £22.48 for 5l

Btw I looked atbthebVr1 datasheet which still mentions ZDDP but not what the concentration is.

                        Hello,

The engine on my TR6 was rebuilt by an expert in Northern Germany five years ago. As he used modern parts (valve guides, etc.) he said that he wants me to use modern oils only. He even went as far as to demand that I use CASTROL Formula Edge RS 10W60 - otherwise the warranty would have run out.

So I did and was very happy with this decision. So far the bottom of the engine is extremely dry - no oil leaks what so ever.

                        Touch wood!

                        Dieter.

RS 10W60? For the right applications that's a damned good oil, but also a damned pricey oil too!

If you need cheap car batteries ask anyone you know with a Halfords trade card to assist you. Their Bosch Silver batteries and even their Calcium batteries are pretty good (well, mine doesn't struggle after a bit of a layup ).
