    Steering Wheel Question

    Hi folks,

I haven't taken my restoration on the road yet, but comparing the comfortable thickness of my daily driver's steering wheel with that of the Stag, I decided to look for a lace-up steering wheel glove that would thicken up the rim a bit. There doesn't seem to be anything 'period' available that will fit a wheel with a rim diameter of 14.5 inches and a grip circumference of 2 and 3/4" (70cm).

It's occurred to me that I may have a wheel which has a thin rim. I don't know if there was any difference in size and thickness between a Mk1 or a Mk 2 wheel, but can anyone advise if there is, please?

If there isn't, I may have to drop a birthday hint for a nice shiny Moto-Lita.

    Any thoughts appreciated.

    Duncan, Skye.

I think they did thicken up the rim for the Mk2. Still too thin for me though, I put a wood rimmed Mountney on.

The MKII's are a smaller diameter than the MKI's. I don't know anything about the relative thicknesses but the MKII's are pretty skinny compared to modern ones.

Having a thin wheel is all part of the period driving experience

I have a MK1 the wheel is the large type and thin but I like it, it just seems to fit well I can have my arm on the door and hold the wheel very easy my other choice would be a Moto Lita but that would get hot sitting in the sun ouch

Ok, Guys, Thank you very much. That's a good distillation of thoughts for me to get a 'grip' on.

I have a better 'feel' for the subject now and reckon I'll hang on to my wheel 'till I get used to it.

How about buying a pair of sheepskin mittens to drive in, that way you will get the feel of a modern steering wheel but keep the original look of the stag steering wheel. lol

I think that is right, along with with the switches etc. The Stag is like on the cusp of the old and the new, but nothing new has the sound that the Stag makes, or the style. So many jelly moulds or quirky designs for the hell of it. Does nobody go to art school anymore or know about ergonomics?

How about a pair of string back welding mittens that should make it feel bigger.

                              NOOOOooooo!! - I'll have nightmares!

If I go this route, it'll be a proper leather lace-up cover, similar to the original fitting, using the side stitching to draw it together and get a close fitting. I just haven't found one that fits such a narrow wheel as the Stag has. There are those at £46.30 (incl P & P) and somehow the term 'reassuringly expensive' just does not chime. I'll keep a quiet weather eye out but am happy to wait until Malvern and see what others have done.

Thanks for all the help, guys.
