    Stag project values??

    Hi all.

    Firstly,,,Hi !!

I am a Stag forum newbie, but not a classic car owning newbie!

    I know of a 1975/6 Stag,original 3L eng,man/od,70k miles,s/s exh,hardtop,T bar,in yellow,"inca,mimosa?" a nice black interior,wood is good,that has been off the road for about 12 yrs.
It was subject to a total body overhaul and respray along with the underside being sorted about 10yrs ago.
Engine and box ran really sweet, and was started regularly up till about 3 yrs ago.
    It could do with new/good s/h door cards,new carpets,minor trim bits,f & r bumper rechrome,new tyres and a good service.
Owner thinks there maybe a new hood somewhere.
It has been stored in V good dry and airy conditions, but dusty,so obviously needs a real good deep clean.
Resto stalled due to usual work and family issues.

Now I know its difficult to put a price on a car without seeing it,but you lot know your Stags!!

I've used my 1971 Rover P6V8 as my daily driver for the last 12yrs and have refurbished my 1970 TR6!
I have repaired, recomissioned and restored classics as a hobby for the last 35yrs,so I know what to look for and where to look, and basically whats involved repairwise.

If I buy it,I reckon it will take me a good 3 months of weekends and some evenings to get it sorted to a very good standard, and probably about £2k to spend on it."new chrome, tyres etc"

    So?
Based on the facts as presented, what in your opinions would be a fair price to pay for this car?

    Cheers all,,,, Dave,,aka Pilkie!

Hi Dave. If the body work is fine and needs nothing more than a clean and the engine is ok, I'd offer £3K tops !! Chrome aint cheap and neither are the interiors. I spent hundreds just refurbing my front seats!

Can you get underneath and have a good look/poke around?

I like the TR and Rover, the number plates are worth more than my stag!!!

    p.s, welcome to the forum

      Welcome Dave.

Great looking cars you have. No one can say definitivley what the value of that project is but I would have thought if you got it for £3k it would be a coup. Worth a bit more in my opinion.

welcome Pilkie as a register member as well as stag owners club I welcome your input, banter and sense of humour found on the other forum I was sorry you did not win that steering wheel off my ebay sale a few years ago. I did not think your new garage whilst impressive could cope with another classic.

I think 3k sounds ok, because if you can get it sorted for 2k you have a bargain there. BUT, if the engine has not been dry stored with a good coat of oil in the bores etc it may have suffered some corrosion. I paid a bit more than that for mine on the basis that the engine had been rebuilt, all new parts etc. Body all restored, just needed final stages of putting back together. I did find later that some parts were missing. When I collected the engine it had almost siezed due to being stored in a shed for 3 years. With some patience and plenty of diesel in the bores it is now moving freely, so I am hoping it will run well. Still happy with my purchase though so far.

            Hello Dave

Not another TR Register member gone soft and lusting after a bit of creature comforts like PAS, servo assistance, auto gears and leccy windows

There's no stopping you - have you sold that 541 yet?

Welcome to the world of Stags. If you buy one, you'll find it complements the TR very well

            Regards

            Peter Dykins

              Hi Peter.

No not gone soft, got most of those attributes in the P6V8!
The early Jensen 541 has now been sold.
But I need to have a project for the summer months.
I have always thought of the Stag as the ideal car to fit in between my P6V8 and the TR6.
The plan is to buy 2 different cars, valued individually, and a deal agreed for the pair from the seller,,"The Althorpe group owner". finish and sell the other and keep the Stag.
Meanwhile am keeping myself busy with some welding and tuition with my nephews mini project.

                'Althorpe' as in 'Spencer?'

Their old stuff is worth a fortune especially if Diana ever went in it!

And if all works out well, the other will be finished off and sold leaving me with the Stag virtually for free!

Sadly nothing to do with the Althorpe/Spencer family!
It relates to a name mis-spelling of a rare car called a Calthorpe,,,,Peter knows!

It sounds like a lovely car. If the car had a photographic respray to see what's hidden it would alter the value I think. There are so many things to consider. I think I over paid for mine but sometimes i think well my engine had lots of money spent new clutch crank bearing rebore and chains done It's great seeing in one post stags selling for 30 k and another post saying don't give over 2 k. I think a cars value is also based on supply and demand. The demand is there for sure but when you look about there are so many stags for sale it's amazing how the cars have lasted. All thanks to people on here as well I think £3500 is fair for a stag needing tlc but I helped sell one for £1800 that needed restoring but had great chrome and was on the road tax free too
                      Regards edd

No news from the seller yet,but he did say he would contact me early next week as he is busy this week.
Heres a pic of it in its current resting place.

                          Hi Pilkie,

Ref your query in your first post and your recent pic (looks promising!), that looks likes Inca to me.

Btw, where are you in the 'southwest' ?

                          Cheers

So that would make you sort of Wotton Under Edge way ? In fact, you're probably about 30 miles north of me as I'm actually about 15 miles south of Bath, near Wells.

                              Cheers
