dave ive always bolted the heads down to a flat plate or clamped to a making table before welding ,this will act as a heatsink and minimise any further distortion.i also clean the affected areas with a die grinder fitted with a tungsten burr.
if its not cleaned to good material it wont weld .do not touch cleaned areas with anything after cleaning not even fingers .clean just before welding for best results.
