    Identify.

    I have been offered a Stag engine to possibly assist with the reconstruction of my own motor,it is complete ,bar the left hand head....

    What should i reasonably pay for it?

    And how do I identify a MK1 engine from a MK2?

    Any pointers welcome, Thanks Andrew.

    Hi Andrew

    The usual rule of thumb method is that most MK2 engine heads start with 88 numbers and that the Mk2 pistons have a dimple in the top and the Mk1 are flat..Hope that helps..

      As to what you should pay,it depends on if the crank is good and if it needs a rebore and pistons etc.If its condtion unknown I would have thought around £100.If the rest of it is good it goes on from there but I would have thought up to £300 would be fair in my opinion..

        The 88 is not a definite means of identifying Mk1 or Mk2. Many of the Triumph parts were changed to 88 numbers following parts rationalisation during the BL years. Therefore replacement Mk1 heads sold through Unipart can also have 88 numbers. The only way of telling via numbers is via the 4-digit number preceded by a V. If the second number is a 1 then it is Mk1; if it is a 2 then it is Mk2.

            You chaps are amazing,thanks for the replies.....I will have my Stag motor rebuilt ,whether or not it is replaced in the Stag or something else I know not. Just as a matter of interest,do any of you know what else the Stag V8 can be used in?

              Your man for this is Neil 'Flying Farmer'. He has stuck the TV8 in several other vehicles.
