    Great idea

Uninsured drivers to be left high and dry at pumps
Cameras at petrol stations will automatically prevent uninsured or untaxed vehicles from being filled with fuel, under a plan being drawn up by Downing Street. Officials in No 10 are working on a high-tech solution for cracking down on the estimated 1.4m motorists who drive without insurance. They hope to make use of the existing network of automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras, which are fitted in thousands of petrol station forecourts and detect motorists who drive away without paying.

Great idea in principle but petrol stations exist to sell fuel, not police the motorist. What business is going to want to lose custom and deal with the abuse and hassle that this would inevitably cause?

To implement this, the "authorities" must already know what car / what registration is driving about untaxed and uninsured. Why don't the police then just visit the owner and tow or clamp the car?

Presumably the next step is to stop the fuelling of cars involved in robberies, cars which have been flashed for speeding and haven't paid up, Stags with RV8's which haven't been notified to DVLA etc. etc.??

Does ANPR work with white on black number plates? ;-)

A Great Idea, would be to add road tax to the price of fuel so the people who use the roads the most pay for it and that would include foriegn drivers. Some on here might not agree.

I dont see it as a big problem as all you have to do is get the police to pick up people walking around with petrol cans! As soon as its known, people wont go into petrol stations, so it wont be a problem, unless they are genuine. Even better if your Satg is nicked and they need fuel

Make sure your number plate is secure when this comes in Apparently Number plate theft is already a big problem.

Couldn't agree more. If they did that here with all the foreign traffic transiting through the country from all directions it would be a great source of income.

I 'can' see you having to get a fuel container insured soon.

When I bought my current modern car it took around two weeks for it to appear on the MID, I wouldn't have been able to get any fuel during this period if this comes into force.

It's a lovely idea but I am sure it will just mean that the 'travellers' and all their like will start stealing petrol diesel etc from vehicles or of course the vehicles themselves so they can have their transport - most gypsies (oops sorry - travellers) dont bother to tax let alone insure their vehicles and the Police (God bless them) will not investigate anything to do with this section of the criminal fraternity unless they are really pushed - the fact our post box was stolen by some last friday just illustates the point. If I told the Police they would laugh and say, "yes it's awful, there is a lot of that going on at the moment"
If a crim/traveller/illegal immigrant whoever needs fuel they will get it whether or not their vehicle is taxed/insured/roadworthy - when are the Government ever going to wake up to the fact the whole country is teeming with crim's and do something really serious about it, not slapping wrists or community service stuff!

                        Cheers,
                        Mike
