    The restoration so far

Now the car is off the road I intend to repair the rear end damage that I sustained on the way to national day at uttoxeter it looks a lot worst now I have removed the bumper and chrome .Unfortunately its double skinned so I think it will put up quite a fight .

I took the diff and sub frame out to day, I was very surprised at how easy it was, only took two hours to get it all out . The plan is to remove the old under seal, remove the surface rust and re seal with stone chip then paint.I was very surprised at the condition of the under side of the car it is very solid but I think I have started at the right tine because the under seal is flaking in places and there is a lot of surface rust ,I think its down to all the salt from the last couple of winters .
What is the best thing to paint the sub frame with I thought black Hamerrite and silver for theswinging arms or is there anything better

Hiya, that dent may well respond to pulling, a body slide hammer attached to welded pins, access is so restricted back there, I can't see an option, short of removing the panel. Will your insurance help ? Martin. PS the old trolley jack could do with a polish

I think that the downside to Hammerite is that it can chip off particularly when it is liable to be hit by stones, gravel etc being kicked up from the road. It chips, then water gets under it, and the cycle of rust resumes.

I'd suggest something that stays relatively pliant such as Waxoyl or Dinitrol underseal.

Others, no doubt, will have differing views.

(I must say that I'm impressed with how quickly you got the diff and subframe out - it has taken me the best part of a day to flush and change my Stag's coolant. Probably ended up as mucky as you, but it doesn't half give you a good feeling knowing that it has been done )

          Regards

            Hi John

I highly recommend epoxy mastic "Rustbuster" paint for the underside and chassis. I used in on my resto.

            Regards

I thought when the diff is back in put the bummper iron on attatch a rope then put rope around a tree and drive forwards

You could give it a try mate, but I wouldn't give much for the tree's chances Martin.

I used a simple spray can of aluminium spray for wheels, based on the assumption that wheels also are exposed to the same sort of elements as the swinging arms.

I've only done my subframe bits in black spray-on glossy hammerite so far, but am considering overspraying the exposed surfaces with a Holts spray on black rubber underseal which leaves a nice finish resilient to stone chips.
                          The answer isn't 42, it's 1/137

I did use wheel silver on the swinging arms a couple of years ago but the salt has got the better of it .

I like the sound of the epoxy mastic. I know a pro restoration guy who coats his bare metal in epoxy first as a base.
He used it on his own Ferrari boxer so it must be good stuff
A resilient hard but flexible surface that sticks to anything and epoxy seems to cover that
                              Regards edd
