    Inlet Manifold

    Hi
    The second spark plug hole on the left head needed a helicoil.I removed the head as someone had put a helicoil in not straight and it stripped the threads on spark plug,hence taking the head off,i took it to a engine shop i have used in the past.They put new helicoil in so i put the head back on a torque it up.I then left it for a few months and have only in the last week put the inlet manifold back on.
    My car had been converted to a Weber carb before i bought it in 2003 and i have never had a problem with it.So tried to get it running again and it won't start and fuel was leaking out of the bottom of carb where the base gasket goes onto manifold.I have ordered a new gasket for this.I took top off carb and found lots of sediment in bottom of float bowl.I cleaned this out and re-assembled the carb
    Then i looked in the inlet manifold and could see a lot of fuel just sitting in the manifold,is this normal or is there something wrong or have i fixed it by cleaning the carb???

    I sympathise with the plug hole caper. I had the same happen to me last year.

    To answer your question, I noticed a small pool of fuel in the manifold when took the carbs off recently to fit new Grose valves. I consulted the tech section to be satisfied that this is perfectly normal.

      My weber does the same, just like the Holley before it. It does not seem right but it is normal.

        Yes, mine is the same when I take the carbs off so I think you can assume its normal.

            Webers , holleys,edelbrocks etc generally have a direct enrichment pump which squirts petrol down the venturi when you press the accelerator. If you look down the venturi and dip the throttle you'll probably see it happening. If you pumped the accelerator several times trying to start the engine this may have caused the puddle of fuel, which would be a normal result.
            Try choke out, 1 pump of the accelerator, foot off the accelerator then turn the engine over,generally worked for me when I had weber powered cars.

              Have to say that I take the entire "choke" system off Holleys or Edelbrocks - the accelerator pump means I can always get an engine into life without it, although the fast idle cam can be left in and is useful. Or you can fit an "idle up solenoid" and do it from a switch. The 7 litre unforgiving lump in the Cobra will start at any temps with 4 pumps of the pedal first. Mind you, it does need a little skill to keep it going, but I rather like that, being perverse.

              Most especially, the "auto choke" system, if fitted on those carbs, needs junking.
              Header tanks - you can't beat a bit of bling.
