    Steering Rack Issues

    Hi,
Having a few issues with an exchange steering rack which I would appreciate some help with.
The mounting feet either side of the rack are not level. They are at least 5degrees to 10degrees out and when the new rack is in position on the front cross member mount it does not sit flat. Is this an assembly fault or can this be corrected in the mounts. I suspect the former.
I have centralised the new rack and I've noticed that the flat section of the control valve pinion shaft (i.e location for pinch bolt connecting intermediate shaft) is 180degrees opposite to that of the original rack. Is this another assembly issue? I suspect getting the pinch bolt back in might be more difficult but otherwise probably acceptable.
Very new to Stags, owed a TR6 for 29 years so not used to all these mod cons!
    Any help much appreciated.

Had a similar problem on the mountings to you - but for entirely different reasons (oddball rack mounting position due to my particular car). I'll do my best to describe here how to fix it. The main tubular section of the rack has the ends (with the mounts) attached via threaded collars. Nice way to loosen these off is with a peg spanner. Alternative that I used us a hammer and screwdriver. Slacken off the screwed collar, turn the end as appropriate, and tighten it back up again.
As for the splined column input shaft, I'd reason there is no one single "correct position". There are so many variables with regard to tracking and the way the splines of the intermediate shaft interact with the steering column and the rack, it would be all but impossible to have a "standard" - even if we do all own Triumphs here
Simply put - what is 180 degrees out for your car may be perfect for another. If you're after getting everything aligned just so, pop the steering wheel off, and centre the column using the indicator canceller as a reference point. Pop the intermediate shaft off, set the rack as you would like it to be, and then refit the intermediate shaft and steering wheel.
    Hope this helps.

    Adrian.

Pretty much as Adrian says, the lower intermediate shaft splines will only fit in one position, but the upper will fit wherever you like, engage the steering lock, with the wheel straight and slide it on and bolt it up. Martin.

Hi Adrian and Martin, many thanks for your speedy replies, 1st time I've used a forum, won't be the last. Really useful to get 2nd opinions and tips in times of uncertainty.
One last question. Is it reasonable to expect a 'new' exchange rack to have level feet or is this really an installation adjustment? My inclination is to return this unit and start again.

          Hi Mark,

I take it you mean the two mounting points (4 bolt holes) Yes you would expect that they would be set correctley.

Your choice to send it back but it can be adjusted by loosening the large collar on the rack body and twisting till it is correct.

As Ian says, but you have to wonder about their overall QA/QC if they are happy to send out a rack assembled with misaligned mounting feet

Hi Ian & Dave, thanks. My concerns (overall QA) exactly. Will loosening the large collar on the rack body and twisting affect the rack plunge movement and hence need adjusting?
Will contact supplier today and see what his response is.

No, just loosen enough to adjust and nip up again.

I'd have to say that I'd have expected the rack mountings to be straight, and it's a bit careless if they aren't. But I suspect that careless is all it is - I'd think it more hassle to return it than it is to fix the problem. Mind you - my car needs them at funny angles. My new rack came with everything straight and it was then I learned how to make it fit my car!!

                    Hi Mark,

I think the others have said it all, but I just wanted to say welcome to the forum and to Stag ownership. Like you, this was the very first forum I've ever used and it's a good 'un I reckon

You'll find your new Stag somewhat different to your TR but I'm sure you'll love it for different reasons.

Hope to hear from you on the forum - ask anything !

                    Cheers

                    Julian
