My overheat and has anyone had any experience of 'Dirko' ?

Following on from my overheating drama, my old girl is in bits at the moment. Hopefully (can you all please pray for me ) I've avoided head or head gasket problems.

Having (too impulsively ) stripped out the carbs and inlet manifold, I had to rebuild it all, using Hylomar on a carefully prepared inlet manifold with Payen gaskets, so that I could carry out the few basic checks that I should have done before dimantling in the first place.

I started it up and the bad news was that I still had a slight leak in to the Vee. The good news however was that there was no oil in the water or water in the oil, the plugs were dry and a compression test seemed to indicate all was ok.

I made up a coolant system pressure tester and found a Jubilee clip on the bypass hose had lost it’s thread and so, even though it looked tight, it wasn’t. Replaced clip and restarted the old girl but, after half hour running, although the temperature was static and correct, I still had a leak in to the Vee. As far as I could tell it was coming from the pump overflow, suggesting pump seal gone.

Well, the manifold was in like you-know-what to a blanket but I eventually got it out and then the pump came out ok. I started to dismantle it but, unfortunately, a PO had used so much Loctite that the bolt was virtually welded to the impeller (and yes, I was turning it the right way !!) Finally, in trying to release the bolt, the impeller turned with the bolt and damaged the splines and so it means a reconditioned pump is needed now. Looking at the graphite seal and the underside of the impeller, they have seen better days and I'm hoping that was the cause of my water loss which I, like a right Dork, overlooked and allowed my coolant level to get that bit too low

Anyway, when ordering a recon pump from Paddocks, Graham there suggested using a sealant called 'Dirko'. I have always got on well with Hylomar but I know there are plenty of you on here who swear by Wellseal. However, has anyone any experience of this 'Dirko'?

Well, that's my current state of play and all thoughts or comments on Dirko, or anything else, would be gratefully received.

    Cheers

    Julian

    Hi Julian,

Hopefully you have narrowed it down to something 'simple' and won't have to do battle with the heads. Everything crossed in your favour............... Good luck. Seems a shame to be missing this cracking weather.

          Hi Julian

I've used Dirko, according to a local motor factor it's one of the best, not cheap though. I used it to seal the inlet manifold, seems to be ok, the only gripe I have is the colour (red) it looks a mess when it comes out of the joint, blue hylomar seems to clean up easier.

          Part number: 486955
          Elring Sealing compound

Dirko HT red, the permanently elastic, high-temperature resistant, high-performance seal in a tube.Dirko HT unites the advantage of Dirko’s extreme strength with an extra plus – high-temperature resistance (HT). It can be used without any problem for extremely hot sealing joints where permanent temperatures of +250°C occur. Joints sealed with Dirko HT can even withstand short-term temperatures of up to +300°C without damage.
          Cheers

            Hi Julian,

I hope you get it sorted out soon. I have just rebuilt my engine after reboring and all the parts have been bought from Paddocks.

I have used the product "Dirko" (as it was recommend to me also) and up to know I have no leaks anywhere.

When I was applying it to the various parts it did spread well and seemed to give a good thick covering and has dried with flexibility.

            I hope this helps.

            Tony

Dirko is just about THE name in Germany for high end sealants. Sorry if this sounds like dropping names, but my Ferrari dealer won't use anything else. Dirko is just the manufacturer's name, but the Dirko red (I think that is in the pic above) is what I use extensively.

I'm pretty sure that Dirko is in cahoots with Elring, which in turn is THE name for gaskets over here. They also market a really neat DIY pack of assorted tubes and gasket materials in a single package.

elring seal repair kit from product category tools, equipment and mounting parts. (19,63 €)

AS for it being red, makes me think of the old saying, "You can tell it's got a rebuilt engine from the Hermetite on the front wings". Made me grin anyway ! Martin.

                          Julian.
Nice to know it was not the dreaded head gaskets then!!.
Easy job the water pump....if it goes OK.
Back on the road again next weekend?
The weather looks like it will last the week but I did notice the moon tonight whilst out walking the dog and its on its back and my old Mum always said that when it tips up it will rain as it has "rain in its lap" well lets see if she's right.
Got the engine and gearbox back in mine today and the bottom of the suspension inner flitch welded up yesterday so its looking good . However not started it up yet.
Best of luck with yours keep us all posted.

                          Paul.

hello julian been doing a bit of thread sealing myself over the last few days and have been looking on various sites and found out that if you can heat the bolt(they used a blowtorch in the locktite video) the threadlock loosens....just a thought dean

I have used Dirko before and all has been well (albeit on cam covers). I plan to next use it on another car's sump for which I am told it is the stuff to use.
