    Brake master cylinder

    HI All,
Yesterday whilst checking the Stag over I noticed that the brake fluid was dangerously low. Subsequent investigation found that the master cylinder is leaking fron the joint where it connects to the servo ( Slow leak, found paint bubbling ).
What would be my fix for this please...a diy thread would be helpful or your suggestions. Hope to have this fixed asap for the imminent Sunshine that is coming upon us
    Sukh.

New master cylinder. I think they are a bit of a pain to re seal? I had similar and just fitted a new one. Rom says you need to remove the servo to fit a new cylinder but you do not have to.

        Thanks Len, Giles.
Where did you get one? My first port of call would be LDparts, (not open till April)...Giles, you mentioned not removing the servo to fit the master cylinder...so is it just a matter of removing the bolts and pipes from the M/C, pulling it off and refitting? any gaskets needs replacing?

And lastly when bleeding brakes, I cannot seem to understand the PDWA repositioning thingy that seems to be a potential "spanner in the works" of bleeding. How do I overcome this when the time comes to bleed the brakes.......I understand DJT devised a little nipple thingy to overcome this prob??
        Cheers.

yes that is all I did other than bleeding it. I just bled it gently but I have now made a DJT thingy for next time! I got one from Paddocks.

Hi Sukh, in truth you can bleed in any order you want, just that you may have to repeat it. Best practice states that you start from the wheel furthest from the master, and work closer, the PDWA valve means that the wheel under the master is further away than the nearside one, but it doesn't really matter that much. I've just done it today, and best practice worked for me. To remove the master without the servo, you'll need a quarter drive socket set or ground down ring spanners, conventional spanners can't get to the lower bolt. Good luck, Martin.

              Thanks Martin,
Will be carrying out the work as soon as I can get my hands on a M/C.....Paddocks any good?.

And incidently, Of late there seems to be loads of friends, relative, strangers asking to buy my Stag. I have not been driving mine for some time....their popularity seems to have shot up some how.

FWIW, it is not that awkward to remove the servo from a Stag if you do decide to remove it. .

I would put plenty of old rags round the area Sukh to avoid scratching and more brake fluid spillage and would also give the area a tidy up when the m/c is off.

Nice to hear from you Mark... Yes indeed, I will be removing the Servo and give it a paint as the leaked fluid has bubbled up my repaint that I done over a year ago. Whilst at it I will tidy up the area and rub the pipes down to a high sheen.
Any suggestions as to what I should color paint it?... I hammerite it last time (black).

I re-sealed mine some time ago and all has been well, depends on how good the bore is. Failing that Paddocks are advertising in this months mag at £99 plus the Roland Rat.

Fitting a m-cyl. seal kit is not really worthwhile for a stag.

Bob managed it ok, but generally the bore isnt good enough to last very long.

One of the items is held in with a circlip down the bore which is a pain.

I fitted a seal kit once, and it worked well (for 2 weeks) It had a remachined bore....still didnt last though.

IIRC the new ones were £100 from paddocks - ex trw far east?

Les clark sometimes offers re-sleeved ones.

Ordered one from Paddocks..£129.00. charged me £ 5.00 extra for talking on the phone to them.

I only wanted to confirm the price, since they asked me politely whether I wanted to update my card details I want ahead and placed the order...otherwise i would have done on line. Sent an email, graham replied back that I had tied up their staff,. so was charged £5.00.

Watch it...pay on line after your enquiry..........

Where I come from that's called customer service....surely it takes 2 to make a conversation???

To counter that with a different experience I called Pacet about my fan this morning, couldn't be more helpful and didn't try to sell me anything.

Hi Paul, I've had a 16" Pacet for 5 years, never missed a beat. I got mine from Steve at SVC. Martin.
