    dead stag - oh dear

Guys - maybe pushed an RV8 too far - took it for a great run in this excellent weather, suddenly felt like "running on 4 cyls" lots of top end noise (poss tappets / cam / piston rings etc) - my fault as I kept revs high (6000 +), now a very sick engine - will try to get sorted asap but recession = no dosh
+ this year (after 15 trouble free years) has been c**p (diff extension failure, steering pump issues, steering rack issues, brakes etc ....etc..............) - just when weather getting good

Sorry to hear the tale of woe, but also surprised that you rev it to 6k. Mines got a RV8 in it and its never been at that end of the tacho!

Sadly the RV8 doesn't like 6K revs unless built for it. Standard lifters pump up at about 5700 and hold the valves open. been there, done that, and the con rod little ends stretch and let the press fit gudgeon pins come loose over 6200 on SD1 engines, which wrecks the bores
If you like revs you need a TV8

At least you dont need to be minted to replace it.

sorry to hear this, might not be as bad as you think, and if you can get the parts or another engine off flea bay it could help with the costs

When I over revved my P6 V8 (they only have a 5300rpm red line) I bent lots of push rods but did no other damage, hope its something simple like this.
A complete replacement motor will only cost a few hundred, but thats not a lot of use if you don't have the dosh
            Best of luck,

              bugger

Sorry to hear your woes and just as the weather picks up too.

My Range Rover EFi 3.9v8 doesn't like anything over 4000rpm (probably fuel map) my wallet doesn't like much over 3000rpm . That said it can drag my house down the road at anything over 1000rpm so not much need to go mad with the throttle.

Plenty of RV8's on the bay if your car is set up well for Rv8 then I might be inclinded to hunt down a 3.9 EFI and drop it in. maybe a bit of engineering around trumpet base and plenum to fit it all under the bonnet. complete rusty range rover classics with no mot go for not much more than "over the bridge" scrap prices. Buy a complete runner, haul everything you need out, dump your old rv8 in the boot and weight it in for the same money.

BTW no probs running my TV8 up to the red line, makes the hairs on my neck stand up
Stags and Range Rover Classics - I must be a loony

Interesting to hear you say that - I have often wondered what the revs should be limited too on the TV8 in order to ensure you are not risking any damage.
Mine's an auto so the only time I am likely to over rev it is in top gear, but I don't normally drive it fast in Tenerife, but I have exceeded 90MPH back in the U.K. on a back road one day in a race with a BMW 3 series whose driver seemed quite surprised that my car could do my 90MPH and keep it up for mile after mile.
Not quite sure what 90MPH equates to in revs on BW65 Auto with standard Diff etc.

I think the quickest I have been in mine was about an indicated 85 on my GPS, and I can't say I felt like I wanted to go a lot faster. IIRC, that was about 4500-4750rpm and mine is a RV8 (3.5lit from an SD1) with GM180 3 speed autobox.

Yes, std Rv8 goes fluffy at 5250rpm

The only thing that I had that blew up on a tv8 @ 6250rpm was a fan blade....made a mess.

                      (Holset bearing was seized.)

My toy has a3.9 efi which I go to 5500, not that it really needs to so, but given all the info in this thread I may re programme to lower cut off. My toy's little brother is am MG Midget with a 1.8 K series, tuned for track days and i know a BMW driver who was gutted when I passed him at 90 when I was just going into third but not as pissed as the 911 driver in front who got taken as well.

Seems to me like me need another Poll - but not how old you are - but how fast you have driven your Stag,
but it might be interesting to know what age group the people are who are willing to put their foot down?

I don't think we should include Tony Hart's racing Stag though - and only on "ordinary" roads not Track circuits.

Picture the scene, travelling down the A9, or other nice road, at requisite speed, you come up behind a queue of cars, perhaps 7 or 8, none of which are overtaking, and none of which have left any room to get into. No problem, do the lot. Bide your time and a nice stretch of road will appear. Out you go, huge smile & roar of exhaust. In the middle of said queue is Mr Beemer, so effing predictable, you can hear the wheels turning, '40 year old bangers not getting past me', he pulls out on you, you can see him smirking in the mirror as he speeds up, you can also see the smirk dissapear and the pucker factor take over when he sees your glued to his bumper. The real blast comes when he pulls back in at the front of the queue and you go from cruise to afterburner and leave him for dead, before going back to the requisite speed and proceed along the way.

The icing is if you look back and see Mrs Beemer giving him a real earfull.

I know it is childish, but with 40 years driving and well over 1M miles driven without accident or claim, I still feel the occasional chav moment happening.

Its not the speed, its how you get there that counts.

                              Rgds,
